the first line should be: "it was Don Dellillo whiskey, neat, and a blinking midnight clock." but all pettiness aside this is so beautifully written and i think everyone should look past the drug addiction references and conor's real life to find some actual meaning in the song. yes there's a lot written into conor's lyrics about drugs, but think about what it means for the song. it's about love that becomes unhealthy. "we were a stroke of luck; we were a goldmine and they gutted us" suggests that the speaker and his lover were a couple with perfect potential but they were ruined by drugs and they ruined each other. they became unhealthy for each other and were racing to the death, a goldmine gutted. |

love this song. very rockable and very catchy. i think it sounds like that last line in the chorus is "But I really really need you to" which would kind of change what it's saying. basically carolyne gives the speaker too much power ("you give me authority")and he knows he takes advantage of the fact that she loves him so much. ("'cause i'm not worthy of your affection" and "i know you love me but you'd feel better if you just suck it up and kill me") he needs her to kill him because he knows he can't treat her right but he also knows that he won't stop treating her wrong unless she makes him. |

when i listen to this song, i get i completely different perspective from IDontKnowAnything. not that i think yours is wrong, i just feel it differently. in my perspective, and i guess this is my answer to baby83, it's not that she ACTUALLY messed something or anything up, it's more that she's trying to use that as a way to get over the relationship. in my head it feels like something along the lines of guy and girl are in love or just a relationship or whatever. guy breaks up with girl, goes out with someone else. original girl is heartbroken, thinks she must have just never been good enough for guy and just tries to adjust to the changes. it makes her upset to see him with the other girl, but she was listening when everyone said to let him go and she's trying to be tough. that's at least what it would mean if i was singing this. |

i never thought of those connections to the other albums. i like the restarting of the cycle idea because i listen to the album on repeat so i like the possibility of that. and i could totally agree with william killing the rake and freeing margaret thing now that you say it and i look back on it. |

| i also interpret it that way. you can tell the time change between HoL1 and the bower scene where "our heroine withdraws to the taiga" because it says she starts to show, but the rest seems to all be swift. i feel like here when they say "a sweet little baby" they are talking about the fact that margaret is pregnant with one, not that it's born. | |

i was thinking exactly the same thing. william's "deal" with the river in "annan water" was that as long as he was able to cross and be with margaret, then the river could take him on the way back. the way i see it, they can consider it a death if the make it back to the taiga anyway, because in "the wanting comes in waves" the queen permits william his one night, but says that in the morning, she will take him back (away from margaret) and that will be him repaying his debt to her for saving him and keeping him safe for his whole life. they would rather die together than live without each other. this is one of the most beautiful sad songs. |

this is mostly for my own clarification of the story. let me know if i'm off. so after the rake kidnaps margaret, and the Queen basically says "as long as you keep this girl away from my innocent son (william), i'll help you cross the river," this is basically william following behind, asking the river to help him "To reach the farthest shore where my true love lies in wait for me" and basically says, as long as i can get to the other side in one piece to be with margaret just this once, you can kill me on the way back and i won't care (a la the hazards of love 4?) i also don't understand that bit about "her amber ring" ...insight anyone? |

where it says "no shirt, no shoes" he's actually saying "no coat, no shoes", and it's "don't go telling everyone" not anyone. but whatever way, it's probably one of my favorites off the upcoming album. i'm really excited for it. idk if this is relevant, but the part "My woman, she stood crying like a man/ So where have you been?/ Where have you been?/ I thought you said that all of that was done." makes it sound like he's been lying about where he was and makes me think of like drugs or cheating or something? i wonder what it's really about.. |

ragamuffin is right, the cd jacket for noise floor says the line is "and i guess it's just our turn to hate." i like conor best when he is mean like this song. but about the argument of if it's a friend he wanted more with or if they were together, i think it's more like they were together because otherwise it wouldn't make much sense for him to be so mean about it. and if you look at those last few lines: "I didn't lose it tonight It's been gone half my life It's just, I I've been eating for you" he is saying that he hasn't had an appetite because of things in life that have bothered him and it's not a new thing. i think it's his will to live, and could be tied into an eating disorder he may or may not have. not an eating disorder in the way where "i'm not skinny enough" or something like that, but an eating disorder in the way that "maybe if i don't eat, i can escape my life" and it's not like a "screw you" or "i've been eating beacuse you don't eat" at the end, he is just saying that she never knew he had been losing his apetite all along because as long as she's been around he's been eating (living) for her. |

i just saw on NME a track by track interview with conor oberst about cassadaga, and when he got to this song he didn't seem to know how to describe it himself. he says alost uncertainly that "it's just a long list. it's a long list of...things. a long list. of things. and... i guess it's good to find your place in the world, wherever that may be." so i tend to think it's less about all that other stuff and meant to be taken almost at face value. as a list of things. and about finding where you belong among all these other things that have places. |
