| Tori Amos – Welcome to England Lyrics | 16 years ago |
|
"Welcome to England is really about a woman who doesn't fit into this man's world, and she has let pieces of herself go ... So many times in these relationships, even with friends, you shave off parts of yourself just so you can kinda get along. Over the years I've come to recognize that you can be in a place but it's not your home. In this song, I wanted to represent this woman's view point with the fact that this isn't her world, but, in order to have love, she has to be in it." - Tori, Visualette Interview Couldn't explain it better than Tori herself! Definitely one of my top 3 on AATS. |

| Tori Amos – The Waitress Lyrics | 16 years ago |
| I agree with comments above comments- the song seems to be about being angry about being angry. If you've ever worked any kind of job with a disgruntled older woman, this song is so spot on! You are mad that they have the power to make them angry- that you might be giving them that power. I also love the passive-aggressiveness of "I believe in peace........BITCH." haha. Gotta love Tori! | |
| Tori Amos – God Lyrics | 16 years ago |
|
"I've always really questioned this whole one-guy God thing. It just seems a little too simple for me, maybe. And if there is a guy, than there's got to be a gal or there wouldn't be little gods. So, just naturally, everything has a male and a female. Every species- except God? That just didn't make sense to me ever. So, therefore, I do think that the biblical God is an underachiever and that he needs a little help and guidance.... He needs a woman- that entity, that essence." - Tori Amos in VH1 Box Set interview about the video |

| Brand New – Noro Lyrics | 16 years ago |
|
I've took the "light" from this song to be kind of a play on the song "This Little Light of Mine," a really popular children's gospel song that you've probably sung if you ever attended a Vacation Bible School. I got the same idea from the lines "I have burned the bush that covered my light Even though I'm scared I won't burn that bright" from You Won't Know. |

| Tori Amos – Mother Lyrics | 16 years ago |
|
To me, it seems to be about someone leaving home for Hollywood/fame. "Dancing" can be whatever talent the person is hoping, and agents are trying to "change my name." The mother may have even been one of those frightening stage moms- living vicariously and making the speaker dream her dream. Just another take. I like the unwanted marriage interpretation too. |

| Arab Strap – I Saw You Lyrics | 17 years ago |
|
my all time favorite Arab Strap song. It is pretty self-explanatory, as is most their stuff. This song in particular seems to be about how intense infatuation tends to lead to a let down if an actual relationship is ever achieved. Sad but sweet awesomeness |

| The Hold Steady – One for the Cutters Lyrics | 17 years ago |
| like KH991269 said, this song definitely seems to be a reference to Breaking Away (and thus Bloomington, Indiana). I actually go to IU, and there is an excessive amount of Cutter pride. | |
| Built to Spill – Carry the Zero Lyrics | 17 years ago |
| I agree that this song is about someone that is overly-analytical. The narrator is trying to tell his significant other/friend this, but it is messing with their relationship. The narrator is an idealist and the other person is a realist, and it is causing a rift between the two. | |
| Brand New – You Won't Know Lyrics | 17 years ago |
|
"I have burned the bush that covered my light Even though I’m scared I won't burn that bright" Until I actually read the lyrics, I didn't see the connections, but this definitely ties back to the VBS/Children's Christian song "This Little Light of Mine." The lines are "Hide it under a bush oh no, I'm going to let it shine." if you know the song, it makes sense. if not, look it up and see if you get what i'm saying. |

| Cat Power – Werewolf (Michael Hurley cover) Lyrics | 17 years ago |
|
I agree that it isn't about an actual werewolf. maybe it is just about someone whose moods turn on a dime or who have self-destructive tendencies. Crying nobody knows, nobody knows, body knows How I loved the man, as I teared off his clothes Crying nobody know, nobody knows my pain When I see that it’s risen; that full moon again here, it seems that she is destroying someone she loves, even though she doesn't want to...? maybe |

| Cat Power – Metal Heart Lyrics | 17 years ago |
|
To me, this song is about someone trying to be someone they are not. They are trying to do the things other people want them to do because they think it will make them happy, but it really is making them miserable. The metal heart represents the separation of the person from his/her own true feelings. i love this song..... |

| The Dresden Dolls – Night Reconnaissance Lyrics | 17 years ago |

reconnaissance -an exploratory military survey of enemy territory this definitely fits with the us vs. them mentality. i think any person can think back to junior high and relate back to it. |
|
| Sufjan Stevens – Romulus Lyrics | 18 years ago |
|
at the beginning of the song, he was ashamed when he talked to his mother but by the end, he is ashamed OF his mother and the way she is. i think that might be the uplifiting part. he's grown up and realizes that his mother was the one in the wrong. |

| Tori Amos – Big Wheel Lyrics | 18 years ago |
|
i think it might be reading too much into it, but does anyone else see the mary magdalene references in here? she was a prostitute, thus the "But baby I don’t need your cash Mama got it all in hell now" stale bread- unleavened bread is a part of the jewish passover, the last supper, and then jesus was put on the cross (the cross reference is not much after that) the gimme 3 (stopping and not going to two or one) could be a reference to the trinity or the idea of mary, jesus, and a baby. and the milf reference just refers back to jesus and mary having a baby. BUT... i may be reading too far in. i just know tori has a liking to pushing the religious envelope, especially with mary magdalene |
