This song is painfully beautiful poetry. To me, these lyrics are as good as anything Bob Dylan ever wrote, which is saying a lot.

The drifter theme is especially moving to me. I myself have been guilty a few times of "escaping" to new towns or settings just to avoid things in my life that depressed me. We think, "I just need to start over. Somewhere new. Everything will be better there." But as he confesses in the song: "I still haven't gotten anywhere that I want." In the end, we can't escape our baggage, though we may try.

After a while, a pattern forms. Find somewhere new... settle for a while... then leave before you get too attached; before you get hurt again.
"I didn't know what I had that day.
Walk a little farther to another plan.
You said that you did, but you didn't understand."
Regret is a terrible thing to live with.

"Plastic Jesus" is actually a really old folk song. On the inside of the CD, they credit this song as "song from Cool Hand Luke" (good movie by the way) because Paul Newman plays it in the movie, but the song itself actually predates even that movie by a fair number of years. So anyway, the lyrics are probably quite literal. I can't really picture old folk singers being sarcastic about religion. Wayne doesn't strike me as being terribly religious, however, so he might've chosen to cover this song to make some sort of subtle statement.
