In this case, however, he seems to be more introvert, meaning because of what was done to him he will now do on others. Just a thought. |

bleak –adjective, -er, -est. 1. bare, desolate, and often windswept: a bleak plain. 2. cold and piercing; raw: a bleak wind. 3. without hope or encouragement; depressing; dreary Just thought i'd share. The title fits the overall tone and mood of the song, as well as my description fitting this definition. A little side note too, while it is unclear who she is or how she died. For someone to be tormented and haunted in that way would have to be someone pretty close to the person. Quite possibly could it be the death of a close family member? Possibly, the betrayal that I talked about is the literal act of them dying |

I must say that I am by far a lyrical expert, but allow me to give some insight on what this song is possibly be about. This is a great song and is one of my favorites by this band. As a long time listener of Opeth and Porcupine Tree the "murder/suicide/killing someone theme mentioned below is not exactly Opeth's style of writing. While most songs are about lost loves and hauntings and figures and symbolism of death and mourning, to me this is one of them, and the imagery used here is probably one of the strongest. And, in this eliminates the "vampire" theme as well. To me, this is a song of someone, possibly Akerfeldt being haunted by the last words spoken by someone who betrayed him. The other lyrics are the emotional, physical pain and the nightmares that he has to endure. Realizing this post is long, but it is a long song. The point was to illustrate the meanings of each line to form a whole picture/meaning. These are just thoughts to try to help. ---------- Allow me to break it down Beating, heart still beating for the cause (life has to go on, although it may be meaningless, the cause is being life itself) Feeding, soul still feeding from the loss (emotional pain) Aching, limbs are aching from the rush (possibly they/she died in his arms, and the "rush" is of intense emotions) Fading, you are fading from my sight (she's a painful memory) Break of morning, coldness lingers on ("the new day/new start" metaphor but he's still saddened and lost and haunted) Shroud me into nightmares of the sun (he's afraid to live on) Moving, I am moving closer to your side (he's drawn to her after her death by images and the ghost appearance) Luring, you are luring me into the night (the nightmares) Crying, who is crying for you here (emotional pain) Dying, I am dying fast inside your tears (she's sorry for betraying/leaving him) Plunging towards bereavement faster yet Clearing thoughts, my mind is set The Betrayal: "Devious movements in your eyes (intent to hurt them/him?) Moved me from relief (he's realizing the intent and becomes restless) Breath comes out white clouds with your lies (she's speaking what he doesn't wanna hear) And filters through me (he has to live with what was whispered in their final breath) You're close to the final word (she's dying...) You're staring right past me in dismay" (the words were spoken to dishearten and not looking at him because she's sorry for what she said) The Haunting [she's haunting him as closure and a begging for forgiveness. myth has it that ghosts can't rest until their business is settled] "A liquid seeps from your chest And drains me away (i think it's the chill of her presence) Mist ripples round your thin white neck And draws me a line (the outline of the ghost/shadowy figure and the cold chill in the room because of their presence) Cold fingers mark this dying wreck (a beckoning by the dead for closure) This moment is mine" (a longing for the moment where he may be at peace, or reference to the closure) Help me, cure you (forgiving the ghost's intent/betrayal) Atone for all you've done (again becoming peaceful) Help me, leave you (relieving/banishing the ghost) As all the days are gone (putting it in his past) Night fall again (the nightmares return) Taking what's left of me (he's breaking down from the fear and anxiety from the nightmares) Slight twist, shivering corpse Ornated with water, fills the cracks Clasped in my lims by tradition (possibly the last rites and the holy water to be at peace? not to get religious, but it goes along with the "closure" so that they may finally be at peace) This is all you need ---------- Tell me what you think...i'm willing to discuss. As I am open to all possible interpretations, not EVERY song relates to suicide and murder, and "dark songs" aren't always about the undead and vampires. Such is the case with Opeth. One can't help to admire the "artistic," although forbidding and morbid visions of death and loss. Also, would one expect anything less than another great song from Wilson and Akerfeldt? |
