Needtobreathe – Shine On Lyrics 18 years ago
I think this song is written from God's point of view. It's got so many references, including "I was with you in the valley" from Psalm 23, as well as "I am with you still", which i'm not sure is from. However, I believe this song is just an encouragement from God to His followers to keep persisting and shining on despite any obstacles they come across. He reassures them that it's okay to keep going, and not to forget about Him in their daily lives as they deal with the material things.

The Postal Service – The District Sleeps Alone Tonight Lyrics 18 years ago
I've only read through one or two pages of these interpretations, so please forgive me if this has been said.

To me, this song has such strong connotations of being in prison. For instance, I know inmate visitors don't typically wear 'visitor' nametags, but I feel that it's more about the vast difference between the two more than the literal vinyl sticker itself.

Going back a little, the smeared black ink reminds me of the ink used for fingerprints, and sweaty hands of the last time they might have grasped each other before being torn apart. In addition, it feels like he's so focused on that, that he doesn't really filter in any last demands she's trying to tell him.

I took the gaudy apartment complex to symbolize an actual cell, and the stranger with the door key to be the warden. The way gibbard sings it could give the impression that a drunken arrest could have been made, making for "the loneliest evening": one spent in a temporary jail cell. As for probably the most crucial line "I am finally seeing/ I was the one worth leaving", .. I need to think about it some more. =x
