Counting Crows – Cowboys Lyrics 17 years ago
Personally I think it's about a girl. He thinks it should have went a different way, but it didn't. Sounds like originally he had her but she made some claim about him not being serious about it, or being what she wanted. Then she went and hooked up with some other guy. Adam sounds like he was in love with her, but she just didn't believe him. Now he's describing how he understands the reaction by sociopaths to go to murder to change things. He's describing how if he just took out this one guy, things may be different, but he's a believer and won't stoop to those levels. Now he doesn't believe her when she says that she doesn't love him, cause he knows she does. And he's really disappointed to the point where he can't watch her be with someone else because it's killing him. What does he have to do to change the world? He feels he just needs a way to draw her attention because he loves her, but she keeps saying she doesn't like him and has this other guy. Cowboys on the radio are republican talk show hosts. Lincoln was also a republican. I think he's referencing the ideals of this new guy and how he can't believe she'd date someone like that. Someone who doesn't even make her feel. Compared to this new guy he can't believe that his views are being subjected to this guys standards.

As a dual role, it's an ending to the saturday portion because he started with 1492 which is clearly a columbus reference, and he hasn't become what he intended to become when he first set out. And now he's failed and having all these dismal thoughts. That's why keeps repeating that he's not anything. But if he wanted to be something, he could be a murderer. Specifically of this guy.
