| Going WAY back: I think the reference to flocks of sheep isn't cliche at all. Jesus often refers to himself as a 'shepherd', and there's the image of the 'Holy Lamb' of God. Thus using the sheep metaphor is deliciously ironic. :) BTW, awesome song. | |

It's something about a guy who does things that are misunderstood by other people - everything he does is 'awkwardly reversed' to mean something beside what he meant to do, and this happens quite often, hence the 'I always put myself in destructive situations'. 'When it all comes crashing' means that the consequences of what he's done have finally caught up to him; his actions have piled up so much that it all falls apart. The lines about the phone means he wants to escape from the stuff he's done. He wants to hide, maybe by sinking to the bottom of a pool and becoming a 'social ghost', a mere memory. And yet he desires to be reminded of the things he's done; he want to cut a hole in his box to let sunshine in 'to remind him of what I've done and where I've been'. Maybe because he feels forgetting means somehow getting away with it? Yet through it all, he still says 'don't give in, don't give up'. |
