Tool – Intolerance Lyrics 16 years ago
Personally, I don't this song has anything to do with the military, although I would not be surprised at all if Maynard got the whole "lie, cheat, and steal" part from when he studied at West Point Prep School, as the Cadet Honor Code does state that "A cadet will not lie, cheat, steal nor tolerate those who do". Other than that, I see no reference to the military at all throughout the song. Instead I think the song is about people in general and Maynard's inability to tolerate human nature (or his anger at the fact that he DOES tolerate it). It seems that at the beginning of the song, he still has some tolerance, but by the end, it just seems that he's completely fed up with people and their bullshit. Although people may try to hide it behind a "veil of virtue", it's inescapable; not even Maynard is excluded, as he clearly states in the song ("I am not innocent"). I have to say though, I'm sure I can come up with quite a few more flaws in human nature than just lying, cheating, and stealing... haha.

I don't claim that this is the "right answer", as I can't be COMPLETELY sure what point Maynard intended to get across with the song, nor can anybody else. Even if one were able to ask Maynard himself, they'd be lucky to get a straight-answer, as Tool encourages listeners to come up with their own interpretations of the band's songs and hopefully make some kind of personal connections to them. This is in response to a comment that was left almost 5 years ago... so I guess it's somewhat pointless, but I just think it's really arrogant to claim that your interpretation is the one that is right.

Back to the song, I can connect to the it, as I find it extremely difficult to see the best in people (or what little there is of it) and extremely easy to see the worst (of which there is much more). Noone is innocent.

A Perfect Circle – Judith Lyrics 16 years ago
So assuming you know the situation with Maynard's mother, this song is very easy to understand. She was left paralyzed for 27 years before she died, but she kept her faith in god the entire time (and, of course, the song is named after her). This was written before she died and it is basically asking the question "How can you remain so completely faithful to your god when he has done this to you?"

The beginning is Maynard saying that he is never going to choose to have blind faith in the god that would allow this to happen.

"Oh so many ways for me to show you how your savior has abandoned you"

Well, it's pretty easy to show somebody that their savior has abandoned them when you bring up the fact that he has left them paralyzed for the last 27 years... I mean, what the fuck kind of savior does that?

"Fuck your god
Your lord, your Christ
He did this
Took all you had and
Left you this way
Still you pray, never stray, never
Taste of the fruit
Never thought to question why"

Maynard seems almost disgusted by the fact that god has left his mother paralyzed, pretty much screwing her over for the rest of her life, and yet it has no impact on her unwavering faith.

"It's not like you killed someone
It's not like you drove a hateful spear into his side
Praise the one who left you broken down and paralyzed
He did it all for you"

His mother didn't do anything to deserve such an extreme punishment and she definitely hasn't benefited from it... but she still worships the one who did it to her, or rather the one who should've had the power to prevent it.

The rest of the lyrics are pretty much reiterating the same things, they are just changed up slightly. While the song is about his mother, horrible shit happens to good people all the time, whether they believe in god or not. So this song can relate to any believer in that type of situation.

Nothing is true, never mind my comment on leaving the U.S. since I just saw you live in Britain. Figured I should say it since you seem like the type that would come back saying "I DON'T LIVE IN THE U.S. YOU FUCKING HILLBILLY." I don't think you have the right to say anything about Bush's IQ after some of the silly and childish things you have said.

Wow, some of you people are just... very sad. I don't understand how anybody can compare Bush to Hussein and call him a facist dictator. What the hell are you smoking? Bush is like Saddam Hussein you say. Well, with Hussein in power, anybody caught saying anything negative about him or his government would quite simply... be killed. And yet in this country, anybody can say whatever they like about our leader and our government such as calling Bush a "moronic fascist hillbilly" and saying the U.S. is a craphole. Well if that's what you think, why don't you just leave. I'm sure Iraq would be a much nicer place to live. And as for all of you who think this war is all about oil... that's bullshit. I'm not saying oil isn't something we are worried about and isn't some of the reason that we have troops over there but to say that is the main reason we are over there is total and utter shit. We took a REAL dictator out of power. Of course, we found no nuclear weapons in Iraq as President Bush had thought, but there were still biological and chemical weapons which are still weapons of mass destruction. Saddam tested them on his own people. He is no longer in power thanks to our troops. Now we are attempting to keep Iraq a democracy so that it's citizens will not have to live in fear. And while we do this, their are bombings and other terrorist attacks occuring, trying to keep them in fear, trying to keep us from that goal. If we pull out all our troops, everything that we have done and all the lives that were lost will have been for nothing. The terrorists will just get a better foothold, Iraq will not stay a democracy, it will only revert back to how it was before we deployed our troops. You know, they are trying to prevent another 9/11 but maybe that's what we need. Then maybe we will all see that true threat that is posed by these terrorists.

Well the "call an optimist" that makes sense, its like saying "This girl needs some hope" cus it seems hopeless for her. Shes probably got a problem that he found out about and he's worried about her but he isn't telling anybody about it or trying to get her help.

Well I'm thinking that this girl recently broke-up with someone else "the
Eyes of a fallen angel"
and he's trying totake his chance with her, but she either doesn't have feelings for him or just isn't over breaking up
Here I am expecting just a little bit
Too much from the wounded that line also makes me think that she had another relationship that didn't work out. well thats my opinion
