Neil Young – Southern Man Lyrics 16 years ago
Basically its what mouser said. Its the romantic idea of the last great war of chivalry. While the North had a higher population and number of industries and railroads, the South is thought to have gone in with a passion for values that was taught from father to son. That's how Antebellum South was. Many young Southern men joined up because they believed it was their duty, and their chance to find glory on a battlefield. Slavery was pretty much a miniscule issue to them. Because most of them didn't have slaves. Most of them were poor. And most of them didn't find the heroic and romantic last-stand like they had wanted. But that's the reason behind the flag. It has nothing to do with racism, generally. It is Southern pride. Did it make sense to you, or do I need to go back over again?

Well, somehow, I think Lynyrd won. If only because this song is hard to get down to at parties, rodeos, fairs, half-time shows, and other generally fun-having activities.

Sorry, all these insults are really getting to me, being from Georgia myself. You really can't judge someone's character based solely on where they come from. And I know not all Northerners think the same of the South, but with those who refuse to believe the lower half has moved on, it tends to get rather irritating. Especially when people AREN'T kidding. If anyone could ever empathize with the discrimination of the German populace and how they are received based on the deeds of their GRANDPARENTS, its American Southerners. There are racists everywhere, in no way has it now or ever been limited to the South. And for the 'Yankees' who prefer to keep a delusional mindset that every racist jackass is somehow magically contained in one of the lower states, you've only proven that you yourself are a prejudiced twat.

Now, can't we just stop with the same "fuck you racist fuckers"? Fuck the racist ones. Sure. Fuck them all you want, but please stop being little bitches to the rest of us. You have absolutely no foundation for your bigotry toward us anymore, aside from what you've been told to think- God, I'm so glad I was raised to have an open-mind toward all people.

I realize most of you just want to make this into a contest between north and south given the subject matter, rather than critique the song at hand here. I think it has an awesome feel to it, and sounds very much like an R&B gospel, which is an excellent style for the subject being addressed. It gives a very powerful image to the song. I can just picture the 'Southern man' standing with his back to a field in a white buttoned-down shirt, bible in hand. Your mind can just wander through all sorts of images of that time...

Yeah Yeah Yeahs – Maps Lyrics 18 years ago
I sort of thought it was like a wife and her husband and him sacrificing their relationship for work on business trips and such. "Pack up, Don't stray" sort of suggests that. I don't know, but that's what I saw. I don't understand the gay thing that's being thrown out really.

Elton John – Rocket Man Lyrics 18 years ago
I think it's a bout a man who for some reason feels alone, as an astronaut would when he states that "it's lonely out in space". This man obviously has problems that are probably beyond his control, stating that he thinks "its gonna be a long long time" before anything can be repaired. Maybe not just drugs but other matters, such as his wife leaving him, and the reference to him being "high as a kite by then" meaning drinking heavily or some other drug use because of it. But maybe more than that by stating "Mars ain't the kind of place to raise your kids" he could be saying that his lifestyle, whatever it is, is unsuitable and too cold for anyone else to endure. Ah well, I really like this song. Blah.
