-to akasha -bout the whole jack thing
i think JFK was right with what they posted, but also i kind of looked at is as jack from the nursery rhyme jack and jill mixed with JFK. falling down the hill and breaking his head and then the people using him...as a martyr to become their chalice? and drink wine from his head?a scapegoat? the eucharist is a sacrfice to god....drinking christs blood through the eucharist-in a chalice of course- abuse of the leader, like christ, like kennedy? kennedy whose name was john and nicknamed JACK? thats pretty goddamn amazing. i love that line.

Nine Inch Nails – Heresy Lyrics 18 years ago
i love this song.
when i heard it it reminded me of a section of The Gay Science by Friedrich Nietzche.
I thought maybe somebody might wanna read it so here it is...its called the madman. you can find the similarities for yourself.

THE MADMAN----Have you not heard of that madman who lit a lantern in the bright morning hours, ran to the market place, and cried incessantly: "I seek God! I seek God!"---As many of those who did not believe in God were standing around just then, he provoked much laughter. Has he got lost? asked one. Did he lose his way like a child? asked another. Or is he hiding? Is he afraid of us? Has he gone on a voyage? emigrated?---Thus they yelled and laughed

The madman jumped into their midst and pierced them with his eyes. "Whither is God?" he cried; "I will tell you. We have killed him---you and I. All of us are his murderers. But how did we do this? How could we drink up the sea? Who gave us the sponge to wipe away the entire horizon? What were we doing when we unchained this earth from its sun? Whither is it moving now? Whither are we moving? Away from all suns? Are we not plunging continually? Backward, sideward, forward, in all directions? Is there still any up or down? Are we not straying, as through an infinite nothing? Do we not feel the breath of empty space? Has it not become colder? Is not night continually closing in on us? Do we not need to light lanterns in the morning? Do we hear nothing as yet of the noise of the gravediggers who are burying God? Do we smell nothing as yet of the divine decomposition? Gods, too, decompose. God is dead. God remains dead. And we have killed him.

"How shall we comfort ourselves, the murderers of all murderers? What was holiest and mightiest of all that the world has yet owned has bled to death under our knives: who will wipe this blood off us? What water is there for us to clean ourselves? What festivals of atonement, what sacred games shall we have to invent? Is not the greatness of this deed too great for us? Must we ourselves not become gods simply to appear worthy of it? There has never been a greater deed; and whoever is born after us---for the sake of this deed he will belong to a higher history than all history hitherto."

Here the madman fell silent and looked again at his listeners; and they, too, were silent and stared at him in astonishment. At last he threw his lantern on the ground, and it broke into pieces and went out. "I have come too early," he said then; "my time is not yet. This tremendous event is still on its way, still wandering; it has not yet reached the ears of men. Lightning and thunder require time; the light of the stars requires time; deeds, though done, still require time to be seen and heard. This deed is still more distant from them than most distant stars---and yet they have done it themselves.

It has been related further that on the same day the madman forced his way into several churches and there struck up his requiem aeternam deo. Led out and called to account, he is said always to have replied nothing but: "What after all are these churches now if they are not the tombs and sepulchers of God?"

Marilyn Manson – Target Audience (Narcissus Narcosis) Lyrics 18 years ago
am i sorry your sky went black
put your knives in babies backs? (sarcastic remark addressing the hard-core pious people anywhere from parents and priests to politicians- who blame him for the "evil" and the destruction of the youth, and more or less charged him with the fears of the post-columbine world. he's actually in Michael Moore's Bowling for Columbine-which i've yet to see- because so many people blamed him for that. and maybe this remark points the finger back at them-the betrayl of their own children by the way they are brought up in terms of morality? Which in essence creates the "blackness" because it judges by good and evil and other such biases.)
am i sorry you killed the kennedys
and huxley, too?
(judging by the coma white video, i took this as him pinning the people with the death of their savior...much like in the mad man-a passage in Friedrich Nietzsche's the Gay Science....i think...by the way he talks about kennedy in TONS of his songs he compares him to christ, more or less respecting both of them as figures, as leaders, who were subjected to their own people....now link that to the babies with knives in their backs. ha. a perfect circle...kinda like the band..i like their version of "Imagine" by john lennon. its has nice audio angles....But anywway kennedy and huxley were admired by him and they died on the same day i think...because huxley was a poet who wrote the Doors of Perecpetion which is where the Doors that band with Jim Morrison got their name (or so i have heard)...

but i'm sorry Shakespeare was your scapegoat (remorse/sadness/anger over the artists- who are slaughtered just because they proove a point about society. The scapegoat -an actual goat-according to ancient jewish tradition, was sacrificed, one killed for the sins of the israelites and one sent into the wilderness with those sins. The artists are similarly sacrificed for the sins of the people....or at least targeted with social pyres and alters per se. They're judged with the morality and religious standpoints of the critics as well...)
and your apple sticking into my throat (apple from the garden of ededn obviously...being persecuted and judged by the biblical standards...or the "knowledge" that some claim or think their ancestors-or hey-even themselves...have attained.)
sorry your sunday smiles are rusty nails ( phony smiling sabbath people are actually crucifying themselves..and others...obviously)
and your crucifiction commercials failed ( those people's anger ofver the failure of their dogma...their need to attack or prey on and individuality or insubordinance? the media refrrrence is funny to me...kinda like propganda...commercials...subliminal fiiltering of such madness into the everyday life...it works...)

but i'm just a pitiful anonymous (lone nameless statistic...i guess he's addressing the minority...playing the minority...being the minority?)

and i see all the young believers
your target audience
and i see all the old decievers
they all sing their song ( which is extremley self-explanitroy, but it strikes a chord...hehe musical pun...with me because it reminds me of seeing all the little kids getting baptised on sundays and how they're being brainwashed into thiw world of morals and subjectivity and lies and they will grow up most likely limited to that due to their early developmental respect of it. And everything is just passed on.......)
am i sorry just to be alive? (hmm...some people don't like his existence...i'd say this was rather sarcastic towards all the hypocritical protesters at his shows who say we love jesus...so we want you to die....
putting my face in the beehive? (refrences the critics on his "behavior" i guess its a way of saying "the birds and bees." in NIN- Closer reznor uses honey and beehives in the same way...so someone totally stole the analogy but i'm not curious enough to research whose song came out first...)
am i sorry for booth and oswald, ( am i sorry for murderes--like booth and oswald...same concepts as before. MLK etc.)
pinks, and cocaine too?

Sorry you never checked the bomb in my head
for a bomb (which is pretty much the best line ever...tho its meaning is obvious)
and my halo was a needle hole (haha. needle holes..look like halos...they sew things...im not sure waht this line is getting at...maybe the needle punctures things? but it really sews them together. woo. that was soo...not...profound...
sorry i saw a priest being beaten
and i made a wish (priests can make people angry...so i guess he was like...yay down with the child molestors and brain washers? I dont know. that line makes me very sad as a pacifists....)

but im just a pitiful anonymous

valley of death we are free
your fathers your prison, you see. (same as before...people are trapt within their parents values or the values of the generation before them. kinda repetitive but the synths arent bad....)

AFI – The Leaving Song Pt. 2 Lyrics 18 years ago
so basically i think it is summed up by those things...we all have a bit of prometheus? frankenstein? and god in us? We all create something. Everyday we live we must chose what exactly we will make of ourselves, our lives. This song details the choice, the creation that destroys.

well the little comment box asked "what does this song mean to you?" and because I did not see what it means to me already posted (although i skimmed around and didn't read all of them) i decided to type what i got out of it, as bizarre as it is.
So. The whole thing reminds me of the story of Prometheus. In greek mythology he's credited with creating man, and then inducing the creation of Pandora. It also reminded me of creationism, and Mary Shelley's Frankenstein (sometimes called the Modern Prometheus) because of all the lines that speak of creation and destruction.

To... break down, and cease all feeling
Burn now, what once was breathing
Reach out, and you may take my heart away
(this seems retrospective to the creation and destruction)

Imperfect cry, and scream in ecstasy
So what befalls the flawless? (pandora, who was supposed to be beautiful, means all gifted. However, when pandora opened the box that zues gave her, it unleashed destruction, horor and sorrow onto the world of man.) ( Frankenstein views his creation-the monster-as beautiful, at least during the process of creating it, eventually when it is complete he looks at with contempt, rejects it, condmens it as well as himself, and lays the foundation for the rest of the story.)

Look what I've built, it shines so beautifully
(man was supposedly created by Prometheus, think creationism. It also reminds me of Genisis in the bible where this world was supposedly created, all beautiful and perfect "and it was good" and then in the next couple chapters you've got abraham raping his wifes servent, almost murdering his son as a sacrafice, and god smiting the city of Sodom. Yet man, always view themselves as the dominant, intelligent, triumphant and beautiful creation. there is a beauty in humanity-ithink-though that isn't the focus of this song...it highlights the destruction underneath the beauty.) ( also relates to frankenstein) (anyway in all these creation stories the initial creation was viewed as beautiful)
Now watch as it destroys me
(and in each story there is a conclusion with destruction. For Prometheus, he was chained to a rock and tortured by a vulture that ripped up his flesh, -if anyone is interested check out the statue Prométhée enchaîné (Prometheus Bound) by Nicolas-Sébastien Adam, the peice reflects very much-in my opinion-the mood of this song. This part also reminds me of humanity. It reminds me of myself. I have created these things in my life, relatiohships and situations where things have started out beautiful, fufillg what i thought they should, all of my expectations, and somehow through my decisions, or focus, it became a destructive force.

Y regreso agui otra vez y comienzo
(it seems, that scenarios such as the last one i described, are always part of a vicious cycle. it seems any truely devastating concept through obsession or addiction, and even creation to an extent, provides this.)

I left it all behind, and never said goodbye
I left it all behind, and never said goodbye
I left it all behind, and never said goodbye
I left it all to die (the abandonment...present in all scenerios mentioned-prometheus is abandoned on that mountain with the vulcan, frankenstein abandons his creation, some people through devastation feel abandoned by their creator, and i too ahve abandoned some things i have created.

I saw its birth, I watched it grow (the creation)
I felt it change me (which initiated a change)
I took the life, I ate it slow (whether it be taking a life, wasting one's own life, creating life, leeching life from someone else, or (this one matches the 3 main concepts i mentioned) the corruption of the creation...)
Now it consumes me (and finally be completley destroyed, consumed by the problem. Also, i thought it was interesting that fire is often paired with the word consumed....things are consumed or engulfed by flame, and Prometheus gave fire to civilization as well...also in a more metaphorical way the fire is life-the life he gave them? which turned into destruction and corruption as it grew and became consuming. However, fire is usually symbolic of destruction AND redemption, so applied, this song seems kind of hopeful in all its destruction. Pablo Picasso said " Every act of creation is first an act of destruction..." It seems that this song begins with an examination of the destruction-which obviously came from some creation-whatever that may be-it's different for everyone-but it lets you know that equally-like a pheonix-that a new beautiful creation will rise from the ashes...this relates to the cycle of reincarnation that many of you talked about....and i'm like 25% hindu...so i can appreciate that...

I... break down, and cease all feeling
Burn now, what once was breathing
Reach out, and you may take my heart away

(to me this just highlights the state after the destruction-the despair-perhaps the failing as an artist? the ugliness in the creation. as an artist myself, i relate to that...and it seems to match the examples i gave above, prometheus, frankenstein, and god all saw the evil and destruction within their creation at some point...and art, in my mind, is a form of spirituality due to creation....to see an ugliness into what you have poured yourself into completley, what you invested yourself in, and waht you believed to be so beautiful is devastating, especially if it is ripped way, (tear my heart away) and transformed into somethin opposing.
