Lorde – Tennis Court Lyrics 12 years ago
No one seems to have argued this yet, so I'll give it a crack. The line,
"It's a new art form showing people how little we care, yeah"
is a comment on hipsterism, whose dominant characteristic is ironic criticism.

Others have described it better than I have, so I'll let them do the speaking:

Rob Horning's April 2009 article "The Death of the Hipster" in PopMatters, he states that the hipster might be the "embodiment of postmodernism as a spent force, revealing what happens when pastiche and irony exhaust themselves as aesthetics." In a New York Times editorial, Mark Grief states that the much-cited difficulty in analyzing the term stems from the fact that any attempt to do so provokes universal anxiety, since it "calls everyone's bluff".

Interesting theory. With an average house price around NZ$800-1 million, Devonport (the suburb Lorde was raised in) is a particularly sought after and pricey piece of Auckland real estate (while noting that New Zealand isn't exactly the luxury depicted in many modern music videos). So, I still don't know why she's not proud of her neighbourhood, but it sure isn't because it's a ghetto.

I agree. In my experience, country clubs don't exist as a concept in little ol' New Zealand (not a criticism - I'm a Kiwi myself). It's more likely to refer to either the generic "place teenagers can get away from adults", but I prefer MarisaKregel's explanation of the revolutionary French Tennis Court Oath: extensive meaningful debate leading to something tangible. I gather she's reasonably well read, so that's not as implausible as it might sound for an interpretation.

Great insight. I now know more about the 'Serment du jeu de paume' than I'm sure I'll ever need to know!

It's "southern cousins." (NZ being way down near the Southern Ocean.)

And Annelise: I don't think I've ever quite read so many supportive/positive comments on the interweb. Thank you; it makes for enjoyable reading!

Simply amazing. As a Kiwi currently living in Germany I find the distance theme, with her sister a sometime resident of New Zealand, curiously familiar. I first heard this on a student radio station back in NZ, and it perpetually reminds me of home.
