| Bob Dylan – Mr. Tambourine Man Lyrics | 18 years ago |

Mr tambourine man is not a drug song. it seems like it at first listen, but it isnt. it is about bob dylan getting inpiration for song writing. most of the song was written when he stayed up all night, playing the same song over and over again(some early rock and roll song, i cant remember which), focusing entirely on writing this song. also, the name mr tambourine man was inspired by someone(possibly pete seger) who brought an oversized tambourine to the studio one day. this has very little to do with the song itself however. but, mr. tambourine man was obviously not a drug dealer. the first verse talks about how he hasnt got any songs in him. its late, and he isnt going to sleep. he can't see. he can't walk(this is particularily important). he also cant dream(he has no ideas for songs) the chorus asks mr tambourine man to inspire him. he is going to stay up all night, and in the morning he will follow him. the next verse asks him to take him to a place where he can break out of his senseless state. he says he is waiting to be able to wander, in contrast to being branded on his feet. he is ready to be taken into this place in his mind where he can write. the next verse takes the song farther, saying that the sky is the limit(other than the sky, there are no fences facin'). if you hear vague traces of skipping reals of rhyme to your tambourine in time, is saying to mr tambourine man that he is going to write lyrics to his music. he also puts in that he can never write as well as mr. tambourine man, and that he is always chasing, as if mr. tambourine man is that constant strive to write a better song. the final verse is the final push to reach that realm of conscienceness where he can write that perfect song. he describes that perfect place where he wants to be. an interesting story about this song is what happened at the '65 folk festival. bob dylan played 3 rock songs and was booed off the stage. people pleeded that he come back and play acoustic songs. so, he came on, played this song, and Its all over now baby blue. the audience cheered frantically. but, bob was sending a message to them with these songs. tambourine man being about following his inspiration, and its all over now baby blue being about leaving the folk world. the audience loved it, but it was really a brilliant rejection to the folkies. Wonderful |

Mr. Tambourine Man is certainly not about drugs, although at first glance it does seem like it is. Really, its about bob dylan finding inspiration to write songs. an important note on hte song is that mr. tambourine man is a real person(possibly peete seger, but i cant remember). he once brought a rather large tambourine to the studio. the song isnt really about him at all, it was just the inspiration for the name mr. tambourine man. Another important note is that he stayed up all night writing most of the song, and he wasnt high at the time. anyway, the song's first verse talks about how he cant write any music. he is blind. he can't walk, he is branded on his feet(that part is important). he can't dream(no ideas). |

alright bobby, you think that my analysis was superficial eh. Everything in my analysis is true. that is what the album is about. Roger waters wrote it that way, I can't make it any deeper than that. Now, you probably don't even own the album(you thought david wrote wish you were here), that's why you don't understand it. To say that Pink Floyd wrote a song about drugs is terribly superficial. and seriously, taking 4 trips a day, syd doesnt have a lot of time to be doing anything else. and i got that from Nick mason's(thats the drummer, in case you dont know) biography of pink floyd. You can put as much insight into the idea that wish you were here is about drugs as you want, it doesnt matter, thats not what the song is about at all. If you dont think my analysis is deep, then the song isn't deep. |

| i would just like to point out to bob that David gilmour did not write this song. Roger Waters did. Also, Syd barrett only did LSD, and probably pot, but he didnt do cocaine or anything else. Ive read a lot of interviews/ writings on this subject. I can assure you that my explanation above is what the song/album is about | |

In order to understand the meaning of this song, you must first understand the meaning of the album. the album uses a lot of themes surrounding absense, more particularily being somewhere only partially. the songs flow through a story about syd barrett, but they have a much deeper meaning. the first song is shine on. this is a tribute to syd himself. it mentions the "steel breeze" twice. this is breeze that "carved" syd into the reclusive man that he became. the lyrics end with the singer telling barrett to shine. the song finally fades into the mechanical noises of the next song, welcome to the machine. the "machine" is the music industry. roger considers the music industry a machine because the industry does not care about music, but rather making profit off of music. the tribute song to syd barrett fading into the machine represents syd being sucked into the machine. the song describes syd being taken advantage of by these bussiness men that run the machine. he is being controlled. he is told what to aspire to(what did you dream, it's alright we told you what to dream). first he is told that he wants to play guitar well, which is reasonable. It then goes on to tell him that he wants to make a lot of money(you dreamed of loving to drive in your jaguar). syd is taken over by the machine. at the end of the song noises of a party are heard. this shows that he has succumbed to the machine and has become a success. it is important to note the use of electric instruments and ruff vocals that represent the machine. Have a cigar follows. this is about a bussiness man who has obviously made a lot of money off of syd, congratulating him. the bussiness man doesnt know anything about pink floyd("by the way, which ones pink" thinking that one of the band members are named pink). there is no sincerity in what the man has to say. there is no affection. its all about bussiness. the ruff vocals continue, and the instruments are still all electric. there is a lengthy guitar solo. then , in a very pivotal point in the album the speakers blow out. this symbolizes the temporary end of syd's corruption by the machine. Finally, from the the blown speakers slowly comes the title track Wish You Were Here. it starts out very quiet and gets slowly lowder. only acoustic instruments are used, this represents a much more personal and emotionally engaging style(one without the music industry). Syd realizes what has happened, but not fully comprehending it. the vocals are much smoother. and there is a very strong presence of desparation in his voice. he questions himself, "so you think you can tell heaven from hell". he is questioning if he can comprehend reality, if he can tell right from wrong anymore, good things from bad things, real things from fake things("can you tell a smile from a veil"- a smile is true compassion whereas a veil is the disguise the bussiness men use to hide their true feelings). he asks himself if they made him give up what he believed in ("heroes for ghosts"), trade what he truely wanted for something he didnt really want. he is trying to put things in perspective for himself, making obvious comparisons to show the decisions he had made earlier were not actually difficult. it was like choosing fortune and unhappiness over happiness and freedom. the final line of the verse("did you exchange a walk on part in the war for a lead role in a cage") asks himself if he traded his happy life away for fame and fortune but being traped because of it(he is traped in many ways, morally, literally in that he is restricted in his musical range, psychologically). "How I wish, how i wish you were here"- he is calling out to the side of him, his old life that enjoyed music and wasn't caught up in the machine. Pink Floyd is simutaneously calling out for syd barrett. syd wishes that he could escape the machine(an internal conflict) and roger waters wishes that syd was back with them(a real presence). unfortunately, the wind at the end of the song symbolizes the steel breeze, and syd never actually escapes. his desparate attempt at reaching out to himself had failed. the 2nd half of shine on begins, but this time the tribute has a strong feeling of mourning to it. Syd fell to the machine. and roger was using this song to confront his own experiences with the machine confronting them ahead of time. It's an absolutly wonderful story, wish you were here is such an empowering song, the desparate attempt to escape, through personal confrontation. absolutely brilliant. |

| if you like my theory about dark side i sincerely recomend that you find the book "which ones pink?" by phil rose. it has absolutely brilliant explanations on dark side, WYWH, animals, the wall, and the final cut. a track by track, line by line analysis of all of these albums with much of the analysis coming from interviews with roger waters. very well written too. the writer is canadian too, so that just sweetens the deal. | |
| Pink Floyd – Any Colour You Like Lyrics | 18 years ago |
|
dark side is about the things in life that create "anti-life presure". the moon representing these pressures and the Sun representing the alternative(actual happiness). the moon represents the pressures that society pushes on us that seem good at first but do not amount to happiness. the dark side of the moon is the place where you realise that the moon is not as great as first perceived. roger noticed that syd had been effected by the moon and wrote one line in the entire album that drew reference to him. WYWH has the lyrical part of shine on about syd but the musical part is just for entertainment there is no meanings to it. welcome to the machine and have a cigar talk about the music industry, no reference to syd. the song WYWH is about the effects of the music industry on a band member, lots about syd but also alot about how roger was feeling about himself. the wall is about neither roger nor syd. it has personal references but is about a fictional character named pink. pink's father dying and cruel teachers are the only references to rogers chidhood, his mother was nothing like the one portrayed in "mother". in the actual album of the wall there are very few references to syd. comfortably numb is not as some might assume. nobody home has the strongest reference with the hendrix perm. and i guess the retreat from soceity can be seen as a reference but it was not intended by roger. pink floyd is far more creative than to have every album about syd, dig a bit deaper for the real meanings. |

| I am quite certain dark side and the wall are not biographies of barret. dark side has 1 single reference that is only used for an example. the wall has various references but they hardly form a biography. WYWH only half tributes to syd anyway | |

| "which ones pink, an analysis of the concept albums of pink floyd"- by phil rose. an excellent book written after extensive interviews with roger waters. my analysis is fairly factual, i am certain. | |
| Pink Floyd – Waiting for the Worms Lyrics | 18 years ago |
| the worms are negative feelings, roger waters said so himself. waiting for the worms is pink's lashing out on society after his frustration with his wall. he abuses the power that is brought by the large amount of mindless generic fans of his and advertises genocide | |
| Pink Floyd – [The Wall Concept] Lyrics | 18 years ago |
| Juliadream has a great perception of this album. comfortably numb is regrettably the best. another brick is painfully repetative, ive always had great respect for pink floyd for not having the repetative riffs and choruses. there are bad songs on the album and julia picked them out correctly. and the wall certainly doesnt live up to dark side of the moons greatness. but, i still absolutely adore this album. the bad songs on the album are necessary for the plot and while individually they are quite bad, when brought together with the rest of the album they are great for bringing you into pinks world of frustration so you can understand what he is going through. the wall is very different from earlier floyd when you listen to it casually, but the ideas in the wall are a mix of dark side, WYWH, and animals. | |
| Pink Floyd – [The Wall Concept] Lyrics | 18 years ago |

This album tells the story of a musician who recluses from society into himself and his personal wall. roger waters originally began writing this album to express his feelings towards the lack of personal connection between him and his fans. this is shown in the first song's live preformances well, pink floyd had another band play in the flesh. most of the audience didnt even realize that it wasnt pink floyd playing. but while writing the album he found it could have a greater meaning than just retreating from his fans. the first disk of the album tells about all of the things in pink's(the musician) life that are causing his reclusion, such as an over protective mother, a cold wife, war, and controlling teachers. as he tells about these things he becomes colder and colder himself untill he completely retreats behind his wall in goodbye cruel world. the second disk tells about his expiriences within his wall. he finds that it extremely lonely and deppressing isolated from society and attempts to come out but he fails because his attempt is very negative. he tries to except it in comfortably numb but once again is not satisfied. he becomes more and more frustrated and begins lashing out on society until he finally realises that it was his fault all along. his negative views and coldness built the wall and not the people around him. he puts himself on trial with the schoolmaster, mother and his wife acting as witnessesand he orders himself to tear down the wall. this is followed by an absolutely brilliant ending in outside the wall. tells people why not to build walls as they block out the people that you care about. and they people that you block out suffer for it. this is told much more dramatically by the album itself as my description left out much of the mood and feelings created by the album. one of pink floyds greatest albums although some of the ideas are quite overstated they are easy to relate to. conceptually, lyrically and vocally excellent but relative to other pink floyd albums it is somewhat lacking musically. |

| Pink Floyd – Wish You Were Here Lyrics | 18 years ago |
| mantooth, i dont think youve put a lot of thought into this song. the two lost souls are roger waters and syd barret, and the fish bowl represents their confinement brought on by the music industry. i am sure of this as roger waters said so many times in various interviews | |
| Pink Floyd – Any Colour You Like Lyrics | 18 years ago |
| this song is about thinking you have a choice but you really dont. this is expressed by more than just the title. the first half of the song repeats the same few notes on the keyboard except they play it faster, slower, backwards and forwards to create the illusion of listening to different things. it cleverly shows how people are mislead into thinking they are decididing how their life will run but that is not the case as societies pressures force you to take a certain path. | |
| John Lennon – Imagine Lyrics | 18 years ago |
| I cant see how anyone who has listened to floyd, and really put some thought into what they are telling you can say that they are overated. No other band put as much work and dedication into their music. they spend nearly an entire year writing an album then another year recording and perfecting. I despise the stubborn fools who feel pink floyd gets too much recognition for providing the deepest, most thought out music ever produced. dont question pink floyd until you've read the entire "Which ones Pink"- an analysis of the concept albums of pink floyd, it really is incredible. | |
| Led Zeppelin – Tangerine Lyrics | 18 years ago |
| great music(pink floyd-like solo) but lyrically it comes up way short. i think zep fans need to face the fac that zeppelin cant write lyrics. they just talk about a girl in every song. all their songs where written to make money and none are about something they are actually thinking about.nice vocals and guitar riffs but anyone who thinks the lyrics are good needs to hear some more floyd | |
| Led Zeppelin – Living Loving Maid (She's Just a Woman) Lyrics | 18 years ago |
| jimmy page is right to not like this one, he basically contributed a 4 bar guitar riff and a solo. the riff just repeats and repeats, its sooooooo repetitive like a lot of zeppelin songs. | |
| Led Zeppelin – Celebration Day Lyrics | 18 years ago |
| i think the line is supposed to be "my my my im so crappy, im gonna join a band. i really hate this song, repeatative guitar riffs and plant writes about the stupidest things. zeppelin can do way better and zeppelin never does a great job. every song is just a screechy rant about "babe". the only reason they were successful was because they were the first to slam the guitar strings harder and sing louder. page is pretty good though, not on this song | |
| John Lennon – Imagine Lyrics | 18 years ago |
| Anyone who thinks that this song's lyrics are meaningful has to listen to some floyd. Lennon gives an idealistic dream without any explaination on how to achieve this dream and made people believe it. Pink Floyd has the answers, Lennon just rants about a commie world where everyone is happy and everyone shares. its kind of dumb to believe it | |

| Pink Floyd – Breathe Lyrics | 18 years ago |
|
OK I can absolutely garantee i Know what this song is about. The entire album follows the not knew concept of the day and sun to be good things and the night and moon to be bad things. this album more particularily focuses on the moon being the things in life the result in success and fortune but ultimately leave you unhappy where as the sun is the things in life that bring happiness and real joy. this song starts with a child being born and it's mother try to teach it good values don't be afraid to care leave but don't leave me look around, choose your own ground than it goes on to warn that the child's life will only amout to material thing(the moon) because that is the kind of society we live in. for long you live and high you fly and smiles you'll give and tears you'll cry and all your touch and all you see is all your life will ever be after this, the mother speaking on behalf of society tells him to "run"(work) and to dig the hole(also work) and to (forget the sun) leave out the parts in your life that make you happy, just keep working. this is Run rabbit run dig that hole, forget the sun and when at last the work is down don't sit down, it's time to dig another one next the mother says that he will be successful but only if he chooses to take the moon's path(for long you live and high you fly but only if you ride the tide) the moon controls the tide of the ocean so, riding the tide is a metaphor for following the moon. She goes on to say that too much of the moon will result in a stressful life and ultimately an early death musically and lyrically this is one of the most brilliant songs there is, it really sets up the rest of the greatest album ever. |
