| Florence + the Machine – Drumming Song Lyrics | 16 years ago |
| Umm... I'm pretty sure the drums are referring more to the feeling of lust than love, thus the lyrics about moving towards his body and "hotter than hell", and the attempts at religious ceremony to erase them (but it doesn't work) | |

| I thought the lyrics were "saw her in the amber sun" as opposed to "amazon". I like my version better, but doesn't really change the meaning either way... | |
| The White Stripes – Jolene (Dolly Parton cover) Lyrics | 18 years ago |

"I actually prefer Dolly's version. Much as I love Jack, it sounds a little too mope-y whiny-ish for comfort. Still a good song though. " I agree. I think both of the singers have slightly different interpretations of the song, though. Dolly's is less whiney and she sings as though she sort of respects Jolene in a way. And that's so different from the attitudes women are supposed to have towards their competition, that I sort of respect /that/. (I did hear the Dolly version first though. I think which version you hear first makes a difference. In the clip of Dolly I watch, she starts out by making fun of herself and her appearance, I thought it fit in rather well.) |

| Yeah Yeah Yeahs – Y Control Lyrics | 18 years ago |
| I think most people have the gist of the song. My interpretation modifies some of the lyrics only slightly. When she says "I believed them all" I don't necessarily think she's referring to people (plural). I think it could be lies (plural). When she says "you walk, walk, walk, walk" I think she may be talking about a lover walking away (from her). And I agree with whoever said she actually says "my winter's (i.e. dark feelings or depression) out of control" just because that makes a heck of a lot more sense. | |

Uph, I was indeed wrong. From an interview with the band: "The birthday candle is this sort of image of a skinny, awkward white guy in the middle of all these beautiful black people and it doesn’t have any more meaning than being self-conscious but also being sort of delusional and a fantasy image – it’s obviously not any kind of literal thing, but it’s a weird way of expressing the feeling of feeling awkward" |

Maybe I'm interpreting this wrong, but: "I'm a birthday candle in a circle of black girls God is on my side" What do you do with a birthday candle? You blow it, right? |

| The singer-songwriter Greg stated in an interview that this song is loosely based off himself when he was younger I think. | |

Yeah I think obviously it's mostly about sex. Because he's talks at one point about the "next show" though, I interpreted this to perhaps be some sort of a groupie song. He's gonna have a hard time coming into her house quietly cuz he think she's so hot. I thought the "And I turn around, but I think you're crazy if you think this happens a lot..." part referred to how he'd leave if she didn't want him but she should know that he doesn't do the one-night stand thing that much. "I ain't working for your father, but I might as well be" Whatever the two people's situation is, he for some reason feels like she has some control over him or he shouldn't be sleeping with her or something. And again, the reference to the "van" makes me think this song is at least based on some groupie/sex-on-the-road story. "I ain't looking for confusion, but it tends to follow me" Since this comes after the father part, it makes me think he is again referring to how somehow sleeping with this girl might get him in trouble -like either her father wouldn't like it, or else he's just warning the girl about how he's not emotionally available and he doesn't want things to get messy. "Wounded" Yeah at the beginning he says he's wounded. So he's sad over something at the beginning, and looking for physical love to get over it. But overall, I do not think this is a sad song. I think it's a very flirty/sexy song. |
