Matchbox Twenty – If You're Gone Lyrics 13 years ago
It's not about his guitar! In VH1 Storytellers, Rob himself says:

"It wasn't going to be on the record. I wrote it over the break (before Mad Season), right when I met my wife. And it was kinda this situation where she had- we had met, and it was good, it was big. It was strong. It was all gonna happen. And she all of the sudden had this revelation, that she was dating a musician, and it scared the hell out of her. She was like "I don't wanna marry a musician, that's not gonna work..." And so I wrote this song as kind of like a letter to her."

Say Anything – Eloise Lyrics 16 years ago
I'm pretty sure these are the correct lyrics... just wrote them out:

Laid out, puking in the back of a fancy bar.
You and your friends in the front booth,
laughing at my sweet naivety; and its awkward gravity.
Three years, saw the decimation of the world in you.
Messiah complex led a fickle flu, to see its antidote and end in you...
and now I’m gonna leave you.

Eloise, Eloise,
you never meant that much to me
Baby please let go, my Eloise
Let it breed, let it freeze and fall apart in front of me.
My Eloise, you talk the world from me.

So beautiful, the ugliness within you.
Last of three, baby of the family;
spoiled to bits, and rotten to the shining core of you.
And mad with power I’ve seen corrupt, the leaders of this nation
Stricken with, the sickly imitation of a love, the Lord would never stitch
You’ve got my cake, it’s time to dine on the rich

Eloise, Eloise,
you never meant that much to me
Baby please let go, my Eloise
Let it breed, let it freeze and fall apart in front of me.
My Eloise, you talk the world from me.

[Spoke]
Band-Aid, just a bloody Band-Aid. That’s all I ever really was to you Eloise.
A soldier with a syndrome, the dreams of childrens’ screams.
You molded, you shaped, like a god who loathed to create.
Two Band-Aids, two infected Band-Aids, that’s all we really were to each other Eloise.
A couple of stupid kids, throwing a ball back and forth, to see who drops it first!

Eloise, Eloise, you never meant that much to me.
Baby please let go, my Eloise
Let it breed, let it freeze and fall apart in front of me.
My Eloise, you talk the world from me.
You talk the world from me
You talk the world from me
You talk the world from me
You talk the world from me.

This song made my cry... it forces such a sense of empathy on me that I felt like I knew how Dave was feeling when he lost LeRoi, or how close they were

Dave Matthews Band – Why I Am Lyrics 16 years ago
The studio version's lyrics are:

I grew from monkey into man
Then I crushed 15 million with a wave of my hand
I grew drunk on water turned into wine
‘Til I was slave and master at the same damn time

But it’s why I am
It’s why I am
Why I am still here dancing with the GrooGrux King

Out of my head and into the room, hello

A king of men, it makes no sense
Oh bow to the priest while I worship the wench
but it’s why I am always the one who’d make you smile
Why I am
I’m still a snake in the woodpile
It’s why I am still here dancing with the GrooGrux King

Out of my head and into the room
So when my ghost takes me from you
You can remember the fool that I am
Don’t cry baby, don’t cry

The lose and the win of the world
Wrong and right, us and them of the world
It’s the you and the me of the world
But only one way out of the world
It’s the lose and the win of the world
Wrong and right, us and them of the world
It’s the you and the me of the world
Only one way out of the world

It’s why I am unlikely to agree
Why I am, climbing out of my monkey tree
Why I am still here dancing with the GrooGrux King
We’ll be drinking Big Whiskey while we dance and sing
and where my story ends, it’s gonna end with him
Heaven or hell, I’m going down with the GrooGrux King

Why I am the apple of your pretty eye
Why I am the snake in the woodpile
it’s why I am still here dancing with the GrooGrux King

Out of my head and into the room
So when my ghost takes me from you
You can remember the fool that I am
Don’t cry baby, don’t cry

Modest Mouse – Steam Engenius Lyrics 18 years ago
Here are the official lyrics to the song, directly from the digital booklet that came along with the album on iTunes:

I was born in a factory. Far away from the milky teat.
What’s the use?! Oh what’s the use?! You cheered as I
was split in half, a mechanical sacrificial calf for you. Oh
all for you. Steam engenius you see, steam engenius
enough to answer anything you need. But what’s the
use? Human nature was installed in me. I did what’s
right but naturally it wasn’t natural. Still not my fault. I
held in my hands the beating heart of a robot, he’d lost
his car it was sitting there crying out waiting in the park-
ing lot just for you going, “Woo-hoo, woo-hoo, woo-hoo,
woo-hoo.” What a waste of time what a waste of words.
What a waste of strength. Well I spoke in binary and you
for volume and dizzying length. I was bornin a factory,
far away from the milky teat. What’s the use?! Birds flew
out as I was split in half. A mechanical sacrificial calf.
They flew.Oh out they flew.Steam engenius you see.
Steam engenius enough to answer anything you need
and ah that speed.I held in my hands the beating heart
of a robot, he’d lost his car, itwas sitting therecrying
out waiting in the parking lot out for you. What a
waste time. What a waste of words. What a
waste of strength. Well I spoke in binary
and you for volume and for dizzying
length. Woo-hoo woo-hoo woo-hoo!
Both halves arethe better half
like a joke tryin’ to make anoth-
er joke laugh. Ha! Ha! Stasis
is what you brought. Like a
rickshaw getting pulled
around by another rickshaw. In the past talkin’ present
tense. Gonna break it. Gonna wreck it. Gonna try to
make it all make sense. Stasis is what you got. Like a
rickshaw getting’ pulled ’round by another rickshaw.
Steam engenius you see! Steam engenius enough to
bring my own damn doom. What could I do?! I blame
blame that blame had grew. Well deep inside everybody
knew it was them. It was all on them. Things rang of sto-
ries greek. I didn’t want it, you gave me deity. It was you.
Yeah all for you. I was born in a factory far away from
the milky teat. What’s the use?! I held in my hands the
beating heart of a robot. He’d lost his car, he was sitting
there crying out waiting in the parking lot just for you.
Woo-hoo! Woo-hoo! I was thought up by man to think
better than them then revered admired and then
destroyed by them. Hell even all that was my own damn
plan. Well what a waste of time what a waste of strength.
Stasis is what you’ve got. Like a rickshaw getting pulled
around by another rickshaw.

HERE ARE THE OFFICIAL LYRICS:

Although we’d often wondered, it was no thing of wonder
the shit that flew from our minds. While wearing stains of
fresh fruit and riding on shoes of horse glue. On this
ridiculous climb. With great tunnel vision we’d built our-
selves a mission, to ride on bullets inside. Oh what a vain
description of what we had been missing, so why would
anyone try? It was always worth it. That’s the part I seem
to hide, and the busy ant empire had all deserted hive. I
wasn’t always cargo. I was once kind of my own. I guess
I’ll pack up my mind. It took so much effort not to make
an effort. Oh what a flawless design. It was always worth
it. That’s the part I seem to hide and the busy ant
empire put up the closing sign. Even as I had
left Florida. Even as I had left Florida, far
enough, far enough wasn’t far enough. Couldn’t quite
seem to escape myself. Far enough, far enough, far from
Florida. We were all drowsing in cruise control. Far
enough, far enough wasn’t far enough. I stood on my
heart’s porch thinking, “Oh my god I probably have to
carry this whole load.” I couldn’t remember if I tried. I
couldn’t remember if I took my brain out through it so
directly at the goal. I couldn’t remember if I tried. I could
have my mind erased and still not know exactly what I
don’t already know. Even as I had left Florida.
