Death Cab for Cutie – 20th Century Towers Lyrics 18 years ago
this is a song about growing older.

the first verse comments on the change in ideals that [most] everyone takes on later in life. when you are forced to take responsibility and the feeling sadness at losing touch with adolescence which that entails.

in the second verse he mentions the arches of 20th century towers, which i took as a metaphor for age [such as an elderly individual's arched back] and "comfortable cars in motion" represents the relentless passage of time.

the third verse simply states that remaining restless over thoughts of aging and helplessness only makes you a lazy person. unwilling to accept change and wasting the little time you've been given.

the last verse seems to point towards the narrator letting go of his worry and wrapping his arms around something he believes he can count on to help him find the "answers".
be that a lover or perhaps an idea or his hometown [the one he talks to in the second verse].

this is a really good song.
never heard it until recently.
