I agree with those who've said this song was written about the black civil rights movement, but I think part of what makes it such a wonderful song is the fact that anybody can draw their own meaning from the lyrics while still retaining the essential message of being strong when times are tough. That said, I was reading Langston Hughes poetry for an English project when I came across this stanza (taken from "Dreams"): "Hold fast to dreams For if dreams die Life is a broken-winged bird That cannot fly." Does anybody else think this may have been part of the inspiration for Blackbird? |
