| actually im pretty sure bowie wrote all of the songs on the soundtrack specifically for the movie...which is amazing btw.....and since i believe the movies theme is escaping reality by way of fantasy, this song becomes easy to understand..."underground" represents fantasy..."no one can blame you for walking away"...no one can blame her for her wanting fantasy over reality. "underground" (fantasy) is better and more beautiful and shell find want shes truly looking for there.. | |

"How you turned my world, you precious thing You starve and near exhaust me Everything I've done, I've done for you I move the stars for no one" amazing movie, amazing song...i think that bowie represents sarahs imagination and fantasy and so when he says that first line "how you turned my world" means that all of a sudden srah is realizing she needs to say put in reality for the most part.."turned" her imagination aside..."you starve and near exhaust me" shows how much sarah had become obsessed with her fantasy world.."everything ive done, ive done for you"...i guess thats obvious, that he (her imagination/fantasy) has worked hard to keep her happy...butt..."i move the stars for no one"..i think this means that even though he does a lot for her, he cant do everything...she cant have fantasy AND reality at the same time...which is why he cant give her her brother until she gives up her fantasy life...she has to choose..the next 4 lines i think might mean that shes come so far but her eyes tell him she may choose reality over him...and he can be cruel in making her choose, but he must...showing both reality and imagination can be cruel..then he says he still believes in her, still believes theres a chance she can choose fantasy...live without the sunlight, love without your heatbeat..hes saying that she can have what she wants without reality..and then finally the last line "i cant live within you"...could mean he finally gives up at the end of the song and realizes that she wont choose imagination...orrr, and this is what i think more...that he wants fantasy to BECOME her reality...i cant live within you, i have to be all of you, or nothing...but she chooses reality anyways =]/=[...but the "should you need us" scene shows that even though she needs to return to reality, sometimes she can go back to fantasy to pull her through let me know what you think? |

let me first start with how amazing i think this movie is...ive been in love with it since i was little when my uncle made me watch it...i love a lot of the interpretations although unfortunately im not sure if i can agree that Jareth was actually in love with Sarah..im gunna have to go with the view of him representing her imagination and fantasy life...hes trying to woo her with this song saying he can give her everything her life cant in order to keep her entranced in fantasy instead of returning to reality (represented by toby)...therefore i guess the opening scene is her letting her imagination take her over...and when that actually happens, and she faced with the loss of reality, she realizes that she needs to stay focused on that and get her brother back...and in the end with the song "within you" (which im about to go comment on next), thats bowies one last shot at keeping her there...but she says that "he has no power over her" meaning her imagination isnt the boss of her so to speak..and sooooooo she returns to reality...BUT the "should you need us" scene with her and all the characters partying shows that sometimes, as hallospacegirl said above, you do need imagination and fantasy to pull you through.. i basically kinda just said what everyone else said OH and even though id go more with the imagination theme, i think puberty and literally growing up rather then maturing mentally is also an interesting way to look at it either way, definite rite of passage film and i was thinking of this song to be played at my wedding in the future when i came here and saw that someone had it at their wedding...very sweet |
