My own personal opinion on Chevelle's "The Red" is that the lyrics might be portraying a situation along the lines of that of a school shooting-type scenario. "They say freak When your singled out The red.. It filters through" The classic idea of red in certain cultures being related to anger, and sometimes even evil, plays a part here I think. The song then goes on to read "So lay down The threat is real When his sight Comes red again" Lay down most likely is telling the others, maybe the ones who taunt ("The say freak"), to lay low because this anger, this red is real and it's dangerous. "This change He won't contain" Said-student (my own beliefs are that this is all taking place in a school setting) won't hold back or try to tame this "change" (if taken literally, the change in vision, which is now red? so he won't contain his anger). "Slip away To clear your mind When asked What made it show?" The section of "when asked what made it show?" leads me to believe that it's referring to all of the questioning which comes from friends, family, teachers and students, and the general public as to why the shooting happened or what triggered it. "The truth He can't send to most" I like very much these lyrics in the song. It gives you the smallest contribution of the shooter's standpoint. Through the analyzing, the judgement, and even after the act in itself, it's still nearly impossible to fully comprehend the motives in such an act, and equally difficult for the one who's acted to enable others to see "the truth". Again, just my ideas on the piece. Great song, lovely band! *Also, if you happen to share similar thoughts as my own, I would agree that the act should not be limited to a gunning. I suppose it could be any act of violence; school shootings are only one example. |

These lyrics reminds me of a scenario where you have dated someone and either one of your feelings start to fade (especially when you weren't officially in a relationship, only 'seeing each other' so to speak). So it's easy to end it without having to actually announce it. Usually, especially if they remain friends, the one who didn’t end it has lingering feelings that don’t change or leave. The part where one of them is not letting the other alone could work for either of the two people. In the case of the one whose feelings stopped, the other isn't respecting their decision and tries to change their mind. "So fly away and leave it behind Return someday with red in your eyes" Person-One (who decided to stop the ‘relationship’ for whatever their reasons) possibly just wants to forget that anything ever happened between the two of them, but briefly forgets/gives in ("I need you") only to remember why it did not work and why it will not work ("they're coming to take you away"). This could also work for the second person in the way that Person-One wanted to stay friends but will not leave Person-Two alone/can't make up their mind. Person-Two most likely still cares for Person-One, but knows that they have put them through a lot of shit. It truly wouldn’t be in Person-Two’s best interest to get involved with Person-Two again, despite a love they might have for them. They will only end up broken hearted. "I see you cause you won't get out of my way I hear you cause you wont quit screaming my name I feel you cause you won't stop touching my skin" In my case, I have connected this to ‘Away’ through the second scenario because it’s something I know well. I think either could be applied however? These are just my thoughts of course. Sorry about the person-two, person-one use. Haha it probably got confusing. Great band, always enjoy a good Breaking Benjamin song |
