For some reason, this song reminds me of the novel On the Road by Jack Kerouac.
Really good song. I think it's about losing youth, which seems to be a recurring theme in Boxer. It's also about not giving in to the mainstream or the status quo, after holding out for so long. |

I think this song is Tweedy's way of saying that after all the trouble he went through during the rehab era and everything, he can still be creative and doesn't need all the complications to do so. He is gonna "shake off" all the expectations that people have of him, and continue to do what he does best. |

I can't believe more people haven't commented on this song. I think it's one of the best on Alligator.
Anyway, I think this song is about caring for someone deeply, seeing them in a situation that you know isn't good for them, and wanting desperately for them to get out of there for their own good. It's a very selfless song, and it's written out of honest care and in the best interest for another person. |

Just as people were talking about life and death before, I really think that the title of this song, "Keep the Car Running" is definitely another way of saying "stay alive." I guess I think it's meant kind of as a struggle to keep living. |
