Amazing song amazing album. To me this song seems to be about a war veteran who has not only been left physically destroyed by his vocation but emotionally and mentally as well.. And Matt has been known to talk a lot about the old war vets from WWII and Nam that nobody ever really saw back in the 90's, locked away in high security areas, the ones that were totally fried from the experience of warfare and everything that goes with it.. some missing eyes and with all sorts of issues, Matt has expressed his feelings on the human race and the government about things like this... and in short that is what this song sort of means to me. The futility of it all. |

Best SDRE Song of all, in my opionion.
I can only take a guess at what it is supposed to mean, given that this song is just as hard to interpret as pretty much every other Sunny Day Real Estate song!
I think that Enigk is talking about how his life used to be when he was a child, more carefree and innocent. Perhaps it is about realizing that certain things his mother had taught him in his youth he should have listened to more...

I think this verse is supposed to represent the fact that Enigks mother tried to instill religious ethics in him, but maybe he didn't take it to heart until later on in his life when he had a change of heart..

Of all the Apocalyptica songs to start bashing why the hell would you pick this one? Its by far their best song ever.. and as a trained singer myself, I can appreciate the vocal contribution both Lauri and Ville made to this one. I wish I could sing like that.
Especially for their non-instrumental stuff this song stands out above the rest, you people need to dry up and appreciate good music. |

This is my favorite Metallica song of all time.. I think it is probably the most humble, honest tribute song ever written.. Metallica formulated an emotional masterpiece without even having to write lyrics for this one.. To me, this song overshadows even the great Orion as the best instrumental perhaps in rock history, because of the fact that it insights even more meaning and depth than songs that do have lyrics...
The poem by Cliff Burton is so sad, inspiring and tragically ironic that it gets to me very time I listen to it. One hell of an underrated song here, I would easily put it on a top ten song list iof all time personally...

i actually like this song... i hate Unfogiven II, but this one actually seems very real and emotional... im probably wrong, but this song to me seems to be about battling addiction to alcohol and depression... and perhaps all the fallout that occurs with those that you love when you are helplessly addicted to substances... in my experience being addicted to alcohol in the past, you tend to get edgy and blame others for your shortcomings
"How can I blame you, when its me I can't forgive"
Knowing you are wrong but not having the guts to face up to the fact that other people might know whats best for you better than yourself... to me thats what this song represents.
Just my idea though. |

well, to me this song takes a more metaphorical meaning. i believe that the line 'make me an old chevy' might just be Davey comparing himself to another guy that a girl he is infatuated with is dating. I think to the "narrator" the other guy is somehow "superior" in design and value as far as the girl is concerned. Davey or the narrator is in turn an old beat up chevy, while this other guy is much more valuable to the girl.

when i do listen to this song i tend to listen to it over and over and over again. I think that its about a person being in love with someone they have known for a long time, but that have become distant either physically or emotionally. Perhaps also about being in love with someone who is dead, or that is with somebody else... there's a lot of possibilities for this song, all I know is that its one of my favorites and that it makes me sad... |

i just got out of high school and im so lost right now.... so really, i feel that this song speaks to me on a whole other level at this point. i dont know what to do with myself, and feel that im losing contact with so many of the people i once felt so comfortable around. Everything is thrown into disarray for me right now (not trying to sound over dramatic) but I really think this song is just about all the feelings a person might get in a transitional period of their life. |

I seem to have the feeling that this song is actually about the turmoil within Matchbox 20 as a band following their first album, and the feeling of not knowing where to go after becoming one of the most popular bands in the world at the time, also the ensuing pressure they felt when releasing their follow up albums and the breaking up of the band.... just my initial thoughts as to what it could mean. Of course, you'd have to take the lyrics less literally and more metaphorically... |

almost brings me to tears thinking about a girl that was once my best friend, we would talk every day for long times, and now we barely get in a conversation weekly.... I dunno, I think this song IS about a relationship ending and the guy kinda being surprised but still knows that he did do things wrong and that the girl has every right to be leaving. Kind of like a rude awakening, realizing all at once that what you had been doing was all the wrong stuff....
And I think that it could also mean that the guy is thinking of killing himself, but I don't so much believe in this theory... I think that the guy will just continue his life, continue mulling away on the wrongs that he committed, never being able to move on with his life... and the girl is already onto new and better things...
thats just my take... and a bit of my personal reference... kinda what comes into my head each time i listen to this underrated, beautiful song,.... sad that Rob Thomas went out on his own... MB20 kicked major ass.... |

such a masterpiece. the emotion in this song is unparrarelled.. i believe that this is purely about Jeremy's struggles with his faith, knowing that it has the power to lift him up or crumble his world down to pieces within him. He always believes in God but feels sometimes as though he is acting the wrong way or saying the wrong things, and I think, if im ble to say, he is expressing some possible guilt within his religious beliefs, between them and his actions past or present. This is my favorite song of all time. Bar none. And I listen to almost every style or subgenre of music out there. This man is a genius, and deserves way more credit than he gets. |

I think this song is related to starving children in Africa (literally) and the Chorus is explaining how we just read the newspapers about it and we don't care. As long as we're safe, we're happy. The Government Paper part I believe shows that. Just my two cents. |

I think this song, as a whole, is referring to Jeremy's ever growing faith in God, although some of the lyrics dont altogether make that obvious. I think all of the references to Parents in this song may be in reality another way of referring to Jesus. "The magic glowing of your hand" is Jeremy's awakening to the power of faith in God. I also think that this song is about realizing you can accomplish so much more if you allow yourself to believe you can.

To me this song simply means that you've given everything you have to somebody, you're true loving embrace, and for a while the relationship works, but then suddenly it comes to an end (not sure how) and the Chorus line "How it feels to be Something On") may be referring to how it felt to be with that girl, and now yer basically trying to pick up the pieces of your heart and your life and move on, but it's tough...
That's what it means to me anyway, not sure about the idea of it being about drugs, but we all have our opinions I suppose. :-) |

So about a week goes by and I hear from some friends that she was now with a (bad) friend of mine that I know is just going to treat her like trash. Every day I saw them together it lowered me into a pit of depression, but throughout the entire thing, all I could think about was whether or not she would ever come back to me, realizing i'm the only person thats going to give her a good relationship, and a chance to get her life back on track. Anyway, that's what the song always reminds me of.... just my personal thoughts... |

I can't believe no one has commented on this beautiful piece by the Sea And Cake. What I think the song means is that the lead singer is basically expressing a failed relationship with somebody, wherein they used to Walk down rainy streets together with the Parasol, and when the relationship comes to an end the lead singer is expressing how he feels like a "Ghost of this" He feels kind of bad for breaking it off with the girl, and in the end he has come to terms with his lost relationship as he says "Well I lost some.... yeah" This means he is now at peace. |

JEW is NOT "no talent scum", come to think of it, the band of which you are named after "Stray Light Run" Is no talent scum. Now that we've cleared that little problem up, This song seems to be about a friend of a rather brash guy that breaks the girl's heart and walks out on her, and so now shes crushed, hence the verse "Well it's just like being alone" she can't even speak to her friend anymore because of what his friend did to her. And the JEW version is also very beautiful, and Elliott Smith himself was a fan of some of JEWs earlier stuff, so stop the bashing. |

This song has to be on my top 5 list for... well, what it means to me... because I had a very similar incident going on in my life, with a girl that I reeally wished would love me back, but in the end it was a one-way emotion no matter how hard I tried to get her to even like me... I was the nicest guy in the world to her, and yet we couldn't be more than friends... it was heartbreaking, and every time I listen to this song it's like Jamison is articulating a story from my own life in his song... this song leaves me speechless. |

Well, I can't believe nobody cared to post something on this song, but I personally think it's atleast the disc's Third best song. And the meaning of this song should seem obvious, if you take that meaning from it, that beaing that the song is kinda a pun that implies that Gratitude will have a second disc. However, I know there must be a more in depth meaning to this song... I don't quite know what it is yet. Can anybody give me some tips? Thanks |
