I love the percussion in the song, but I can't help but feel that we're all taking the lyrics too literally.
Feels like something more. |

actually Conor said that if he'd never been in love, but if he had, First Day Of My Life was how he thought it would be.. so haha.. I hope he didn't write a made-up love song for her >.> |

haha I love it when people insult the musical quality of this song. Just proves how little they know of music.
This is a fine example of a eight-bar-blues progression, very Mississippi Delta. If you listen to protest songs from the 1960's, you'll likely find this song to be familiar sounding.
Lyrically, you can't deny how witty it is.
As for the "women's rights" line, it is clearly a reference towards abortion. It is not Conor saying "I believe abortion is right," rather, "Women have the right to decide for themselves whether or not it is right".
In general, I'm glad someone has read the constitution... though I guess I'd be happier if it were the president xD |

When I saw him live (last night, actually), he introduced this song as "Something for all of you people who can't decide on your religion to believe in. It was easy for me."
All of the references to science make it pretty obvious what Conor believes. |

I assumed she was older, perhaps around 15, as her unwashed hair and appearance probably wouldn't have been a big deal if she were just a kid. Also, lockers are only in middle schools and high schools, so she couldn't have been younger than 12. |

god.. this song almost makes me sick it's so good. Maria Taylor's gloomy, pretty voice just adds to the drama of it all. |

I always thought of this song as one terrible fight in a relationship. Sometimes, people get caught up in the idea of romance and how it's supposed to be that they forget real people aren't like that. They're not those characters in sappy Lifetime movies that make your stomach ache with their sweet words, not what you'd write in your books, and nothing like a song.
So, the author's love leaves. Not because of that one fight, per say, just because of a building momentum that can't be fixed, it seems.
And the author can't let go of that person, or who she made that person out to be in her mind.
mm but those are just my thoughts of the song. |

The most satisfying part is that slight southern accent you hear in Maria's voice in the first few lines. It's terribly adorable. |
