I downloaded this song on the go because I was going out for a run and wanted a new playlist. I heard a few beats and I liked it. When it played on my iPod during my run... it was a huge connection. I couldn't believe someone put it into words. To me this song is depression. The description of how it can eat and consume you. My goodness... At least that is what this song means to me. Powerful stuff for me. Needless to say, when I heard this song and the lyrics, I took off. |

Well, I hate politics.. so even if many people interpret is as something political.. EK! Haha, I find a meaning that is.. I'm horrible with words.. it's like someone challenges who he is, and he is standing his ground and saying he will never give in and surrender (to whatever you can relate to). I think one of the things he refuses is to be like everyone else in the typical 'guy' way. He's telling a girl, no matter how much she might put a stamp on his head that he's just like everyone else, he says he doesn't care what she thinks. Who is she to say who he is? He believes he can give more than that. I like to think of it without the relationhip ties, though. As in, someone is challenging you for who you are and what you stand for and you get up off the ground, state your purpose and hold your own. As in, someone is finally questioning you and you have enough sense of self and security to stand up and prove yourself. Beautiful. And MOVING. |

The wonderful thing about music is that, regardless of original intention (which is usually awesome), the song can mean many different things to many different people. I see this song (as related to me) as society. In my eyes, the society, peoples general beliefs, whether is sterotypes, certain religions that believe they conquer all, stigmas or cliches get in the way and put a halter on what you want. I have great feelings for someone society would reject to date me because of a significant age difference. I'm up against society and I refuse to give in. I believe that when I doubt the fact that I can make is with this person, I am a fool to society, giving in under pressure. It's a beautiful song. I think it can be applied in so many ways.. -Stephanie |

| Rush – Driven Lyrics | 18 years ago |

This song is the best live, in my opinion! I'm a believer that all songs, whether or not the writer intended them to be translated as such, have many different meanings to various people. I see the song as, he was going down a path, whether chosen by himself or another entity, and ended up running into obstacles he didn't see (black ice) and he was taken to somewhere that resembled a fools paradise. 'The grass isn't always greener on the other side.' He's afraid. Terrified. At the edge of a hole. Possibly symbolizing-- whatever you want! Depression, a rut, a route of no return. And now he finds that he's doing things he knows is wrong, stealing in and out dark alleys.. theives. ETC.! Through the experience, he's taking the reins, vowing to turn his life/ the situation around. He sees where he was going and tells himself to push through it and go along a better path, or at least down one unlike the previous path! That's how I see it! At least, that's what it means to me. :) 29 DAYS TILL RUSH AT MSG!!! |

I'm going to see them perform at their last venue on the S&A tour. I am so beyond excited and this is the song I want to hear the most live. I'll most likely be wearing my black Rush hoodie! Look for the girl with curly dark hair! P.S.- I posted these lyrics from the booklet inside the CD, but sometimes there is still controversy.. |

| Rush – 2112 Lyrics | 18 years ago |
|
I think everyone needs to stop dissing everyone else for their interpretations and opinions. Yes, 2112 is the name of the song. The song isn't 'based' on Anthem, but it mirrors it very closely. (Anthem is an amazing short read if anyone is interested! It's written by Ayn Rand-- author of Fountainhead and Atlas Shrugged, along with a few others.) Neil wrote 2112 and then realized how closely it was related to Anthem, so he ended up giving her credits for inspiration to the song. "For a start, the extent of my influence by the writings of Ayn Rand should not be overestimated. I am no one's disciple." - Neil Peart He clearly states he is his own person, even though a lot of who he is was inspired by Ayn. He's so amazing.. Who wouldn't want Neil as an idol? |

My favorite. When I feel like I don't appreciate life enough, or I'm going to fast to enjoy anything and wearing myself out, this song gives me life. There aren't any other words truer than these. |

mkg hit it right. Neil made everything much more complex and meaningful, but hey!-- this song still rocks. (-cough- Neil is better. -cough-) :) |

| Rush – Xanadu Lyrics | 18 years ago |
| Well, I can see how you dragged Beowulf into it, (which was a good book BTW), but it definitley has nothing to do with the song.. Samuel Taylor Coleridge is an awesome poet and his poem Kubla Khan is the poem to read to understand Neil's work. I think Kubla Khan isn't his best work, but it's still a good poem. Neil uses the story line to form his own lyrics. I just think that is so cool.. That man never ceases to amaze me. | |
| Rush – Lessons Lyrics | 18 years ago |

I think the song as a whole is slightly confusing on one end, yet can be quite obvious on the other. The first paragraph hits it out of the park at home for me. It's just that drive. I'm going to get there and nothing is going to stop me. Come on, no one can lie. Rush is nothing less than phenomenal. |

| PS- for all those who are going to answer that, yes, I know Geddy is married. | |
| Rush – Tom Sawyer Lyrics | 18 years ago |
| Well, as far as the arguing, go ahead and bash the band, because quite frankly everyone has a right to thier own opinion. Rush is an aquired taste. In my eyes, Geddy Lee is the most amazing vocalist I have ever heard. Neil Peart writes the best lyrics I have ever connected to and Lifeson ties everything together effortlessly and flawlessly. As far as the meaning, I think everyone who posted is right. And well.. SpunkySkunk347... I haven't heard that meaning, but hey, everyone has their own interpretation! Rush is and always will be my favorite. No questions asked. Except, is Geddy single? | |
| Rush – Earthshine Lyrics | 18 years ago |
| I'm really lost with this song. I'm in LOVE with the beggining of this song. It sends chills through my spine thanks to the wonderdul works or Alex and Neil, but as for the lyrics I am utterly lost. Maybe-- possibly-- someone could do a paragraph by paragraph translation for me..? Please..? | |
| The All-American Rejects – It Ends Tonight Lyrics | 18 years ago |
|
One of the many, many (oh God, MANY) reasons I love music is because you can interpret one song so many different ways and you can't be wrong. The artist usually tries to convey one message or is inspired by one happening, but any way it is translated can be correct in anyones eyes. This song actually got me to break up with my boyfriend, not that it wasn't going to happen anyway. It was just something that needed to be done. It suited my situation flawlessly. To me, I see it as a relationship that whether they both loved eachother or not, it wasn't working out. I see it where although he wants her, the little things that clash aren't allowing the big picture to come together and things aren't working out. "The walls are breathing-- my mind's unweaving. Maybe it's best you leave me alone. A weight is lifted on this evening; I give the final blow." I consider the walls to be whatever was holding him back from being happy; he is finding everything he knew is leading to one solution or at least a prominent suggestion, to end the relationship. The weight and burden of carrying a stressful relationship is relieved from 'giving the final blow', which I think is perfectly stated. Through all the arguments, this is the final quarrel. "When darkness turns to light-- it ends tonight; it ends tonight." Those are probably my favorite lines. The transition is realizing what was wrong and being able to resolve it. He is finally seeing the light that he couldn't find and he is putting and end to it for both of them, whether he loves her or not. "A falling star-- at least I fall alone. I can't explain what you can't explain. You're finding things that you didn't know. I look at you with such disdain." Even though he's alone, he knows he'll be fine. They both still have feeling for eachother, but they can't exactly figure out why it's not working; hence small things clash-- big things don't fuction. He looks with disdain; I take that as pity for himself. "Just a little insight woun't make this right." No matter how much he thinks that maybe things could get better, or maybe if he could just see what happens if he did 'this' or 'that' to make it right, it wouldn't piece together. "Now I'm on my own side. It's better than bein' on your side." He's happy he found what he did. He's happy he's no long trapped where he was where he needed to take her view. "It's my fault when you're blind. It's better that I see it through your eyes. All these thoughts locked inside." Now you're the first to know." He regrets (or just realizes he should have made his problems more evident) that he kept his feelings a little too hidden. He's telling her how he feels. It ends tonight. Ohhhhh, sorry I got carried away and that was really long... That was my view on the song. It carried such a close message with me. Awesome words; awesome song. Killa' music AAR. |

| Rush – Lakeside Park Lyrics | 19 years ago |

This song was inspired by where Neil used to work. When he was in his late teens he took up a job at the fairgrounds there.. "Midway hawkers calling "Try your luck with me." Merry-go-round wheezing same old melody. A thousand ten-cent wonders, who could ask for more. A pocketful of silver, the key to heaven's door. " Try your luck with me/ --obviously stating about his jobs, which were the Ball Toss and the Bubble Game. A pocketfull of silver was all you needed to have fun, hence a key to heavens door. I really like the song. It has such a nice melody. I don't know about riffs or guitars or anything like that, but it is really just a nice put together song. |

| Rush – The Enemy Within (Part I of Fear) Lyrics | 19 years ago |
| I love this song. I LOVE this song. It pushed me through so much of intense sports training I went through. To me, it's just about overcoming the only thing in your way; you. You have to live your life, conquer your fears, push through it, and stop holding yourself back. I love it. I-love-it. | |
| Rush – The Spirit Of Radio Lyrics | 19 years ago |
| This song is simply amazing. No wonder it's one of the '500 best songs' in the Rock and Roll HOF. I agree that it has an obvious meaning. The simple delight it used to bring was much more profound then it is today, simple because of the money makers and the greedy 'salesmen'. When you listen to music today, the meaning is so surface level; and I'm being general there, though. You still get great music here and there, but it's nothing like this. It's nothing like Rush and it's nothing like the radio used to be. | |
| Rush – Roll The Bones Lyrics | 19 years ago |
| This song is 100% amazing. I agree with the translation meaning that no matter where you are in life, accept what you are given and do what you can; take your chances. I LOVE the rap at the end of it. Not a lot of bands can pull that off in the middle of a song like this, but it is awesome. Props to the wicked CHANCE taken. They nailed it. | |
| Rush – A Farewell To Kings Lyrics | 19 years ago |
| It doesn't even only apply to politicians. It can be some head of a corporation who wants nothing but money. We have shelved cars that run soley on vegetable oil and mere garbage and are millions of times more effecient, because we want the income from gas money. It's sickening, and Neil hits the nail on the head... like always. | |

I think we all have bits and pieces we interpret differently. I think the first paragraph can be translated to our unhealthy use of the planet. Instead of pouring ourselves a glass of soda, we are on the run and opt for cans we never recycle and require the production of plastic rings that never degrade. Instead of looking toward the American Dream, we choose the 'path of least resistance' and use credit cards for instant gratification, but only end up falling into debt. I can't get enough of Geddy's screeches. |
