This is from the Valley of the Giants website: "We sat on the couch watching Yul Brynner all in black, with lifeless eyes and jingling spurs strutting across the mechanized psycho-desert landscape. Diedre pulled out a pen and began to write lyrics based on the lonely murderous robot cowboy." The movie the band was watching is called Westworld, where Yul Brynner plays a robot cowboy in a Disneyland-inspired theme park. One of the sections of the park is called "Westword" (just as Disneyland has Adventureland, Tomorrowland, etc.) and contains animatronic cowboys with whom a visitor can engage in duels and (should) win. Something goes wrong, though, and the park's robots actually being killing guests. Anyway, Brynner's character in this movie may have inspired the song, but I have a hard time imagining the incredible soundscape produced by Valley of The Giants to be modeled after a faux-Western theme park attraction. It's too real sounding. |
