So basically, this song seems to indicate that casinos are sucky places of empty dreams, and in the song two people who don't really belong there meet. This video to the song rocks my face off: http://www.vimeo.com/4729762 |

| Sufjan Stevens – John Wayne Gacy, Jr. Lyrics | 19 years ago |

Here is a link to a good interview with Sufjan. If you're going to read it, please read the whole thing. http://www.bustedhalo.com/features/BustedSufjanStevens.htm Anyway I would guess this song is about the frightening thought that we all have the potential to do things like Gacy. A lot of people said "no, sufjan, you're not like Gacy." But in a way we all are, just the fact that we are human and we have the potential to do the terrible things Gacy did. And then there was the debate about all sins being equal. While some are committed further down the road of perversion, in the end all sins still bring dishonor to God, from a Christian perspective anyhow. Now a comment further up the page said: "I think it is clear through all of his songs that he has a belief in God and yet it doesn't affect his song writing to be stuck into the mold of "God is good". The thing is that Christian artists have painted themselves into a corner where being a Christian artist simply means trite lyrics with no depth and no personal attachment." Well, the lyrics with no depth he is referring to are probably worship music. Worship music is much different from the stuff sufjan writes. While bands like Switchfoot and Sufjan ponder life, Jars of Clay and David Crowder simply praise God. It's not that Jars of Clay and David Crowder are more "shallow," it's that their style of music is different. Basically, you can't compare the work of Sufjan to David Crowder. They are different styles, and neither is "better" than the other. They just focus on different things. One sings praises to God, the other reflects on life issues. Another thing is, songs like "Casimir Pulaski Day" do not necessarily contradict the fact that God is good. God actually encourages people to wrestle through the tough questions like why do people die of cancer? Christians (i am one if you haven't guessed by now) should work through those questions in their life. The Bible says to be honest with God(read some Psalms!). Casimir Pulaski is blatantly honest and it's wonderful that it is! I know many Christians may ignore these tough questions, but that's not all Christians do! Another thing is that Sufjan's lyrics are not necessarily "Christian", but it doesn't mean that they don't apply to Christianity. Read the interview. I hope that all came off in the way it was in my head. |
