Well, this is pretty obvious. The song is about Albert Speer, the famous Nazi city-planner/architect that pleaded guilty to using slave labor during the Nuremberg Trial. He is said to be Hitler's only friend and the only Nazi to openly admit he knew of what was happening to the Jews. However, he purposely blinded himself with his obsession to build and chose to ignore what was happening. This along with his relationship with Hitler made him somewhat reclusive.
He only served 20 years in jail and later wrote a huge seller "Inside the Third Reich". Amazing that these guys wrote a song about this strange figure |

I have read this is about a relationship Patton had that ended during the recording sessions of the album. As you know, the music was written before the lyrics and Patton penned the lyrics in about 2-weeks. Being that he was a bit younger it could have been one of those few personal songs.
But I highly doubt it is about drugs since Patton never did any and the only member of FNM that did was Roddy and that wasn't till a few years later. Patton's drug is caffeine, obviously. |

Hey System, I can't help it if I am right. Maynard is a hypocrite and this song proves it more and more. He condemns LA for the exact same things he is guilty of. How can you condemn people for buying Lattes and then own your personal winery, buy a $10,000 bottle of wine, and even use capitalism (which he condemns), to make profits off of the luxury good he produces! A fuckin' Politburo Communist to me.
And by the way, the name is a reference to the tv show "The Unit". Since it involves violence, war, guns, and even pro-American messages I highly doubt a Tool fan would want it. The leader of the Unit uses the code name "Snake Doctor". Check it out when you get your head out of Maynard's ass |

Absolutely horrible. Worst thing the band put out until 10,000 Craps. Not only is his sermon flawed in so many ways, the whole "life feeds off of life" is wrong. Life feeds off the sun, which sets into motion a butterfly effect.
To add to the horror show, his lyrics make no sense here going from bad analogies to just randomness. Maynard might be the worst lyricist to exist. |

This song seems to be both about both suicide and life. The Simple reminder is what keeps him alive. The feeling builds up as the song moves on and when it comes to needing a reminder to live, he instead looks for an excuse to die. Probably my favorite FNM song. If it is about drugs, Patton is messing with everyone since, as stated, the only drug he has done/abused is caffiene.
