I partially agree with Hazeleyedpisces2, in the respect that the song is about being afriad to get close to someone. But i think its about an affair. Chino divorced his wife shortly before the making of SNW, i think, because he had an affair with another woman. I think the song shows his anxieties and fear about being trapped in a relationship and being too aprehensive to 'walk...outside'. He also knows what he is doing is wrong 'stay away from you', and so he's torn between his own morals and lust for another. It's quite a sensitve subject, so I'm not sure if he'd write the lyrics for such a catchy song lol, but those were my initial thoughts after reading some of the other comments |

I think its quite arrogant to call other people's interpretations ammusing; Chino's lyrics are purposely cryptic and so we aren't meant to know the exact meaning. Besides, its more fun trying to work them out :) I agree with both opinions, and to support the coma idea there is a song by The Smiths called 'Girlfriend in a Coma'. Chino is a self confessed Morrissey fan, perhaps he wrote this song in accordance to that title? |

This song has many different meanings. I think most will agree that the verses are to be taken at face value - they're about school life, trying to conform (when you think you know me right, I switch it up) and to be popular (I'll be the man). Also I can see messages about success, and how we must ask ourselves about what it takes to succeed in life. However it's the chorus and bridge that confuse me. I've listened to several different versions of the song on youtube, in which Chino changes the words of the chorus slightly. For example instead of 'now that you need them' he sings 'now that you need her' or 'us'. Also I've heard him sing 'Cos back in school, we are the leachers of all' instead of 'leaders'. Could this be a synical look on youth and school culture? We 'leach' off society and repay them by doing badly in school and not ammounting to anything in life? |
