"Chiggery lies" seems to build on what UncleGibb thought.

Chiggers are another name for Trombiculidae, a family of mites. These mites, in their larval stage, are parasites: they find a host and "bite" (not really a bite) the skin.

A Chiggery lie would literally be something eating away at your own skin, your own appearance.

Clap Your Hands Say Yeah – Love Song No. 7 Lyrics 18 years ago
Such a meaningful song...
I'm not one to post three times in a row, but I would love to draw attention to this song so more people can post their ideas on it.
I would love someone to say "you're completely wrong, and this is why" or say "you're correct, and you didn't see this piece of evidence which helps you" or whatever.
Please comment on my interpretation. It's my first attempt really.

Clap Your Hands Say Yeah – Love Song No. 7 Lyrics 18 years ago
I’m going to go out and summarize my ideas first: The song is a guy talking to a girl who is abused by her parents the he loves. She is too preoccupied for her own thoughts and fears to notice it.

Ok, so now I’m going to show you how I got to this conclusion.

Firstly, I’m going to explain the context of the situation and where/when the song takes place. At first, the girl is so drunk that she has to “get a handle on the neighbor’s lawn,” She has been partying late which is shown with “swinging away for the night.”
Now she is safe with the speaker (“safe with me”) but as soon as she get’s home she won’t be. The chorus explains that the song takes place during the awkward time as the guy (speaker) walks the girl back after having a great night to her abusive family (I’m guessing father?). And for the moment, before she goes in her house, she is “safe with him.” Another clue that she is reluctant to go home is that she is getting “a handle on the neighbor’s lawn” instead of her own lawn.

Now where in earth did I get the idea that her parents (or father) is abusive? Well, We’ve seen that she is reluctant to go home, but why? I’m basing this next argument on the fact that Alec Ounsworth is a genius and carefully picked each individual word (like Shakespeare). Instead of saying “clubbing away for the night” Alec sings “swinging.” This ironically relates to her father “swinging” (punches) her. The “doctor” in this case represents science and therefore logic. Logic debates that she “should carry a gun.” By this it means she should protect herself against the abuse. Don’t forget that “gun” is a common innuendo for a penis, alluding (possibly) to rape.
More proof: she “talks” and “move[s] around” in a weird way. She gets incredibly drunk every night, walks around and talks distant. She is so concerned with being abused she feels that she isn’t good enough.

Next I’ll show how the girl thinks about herself and how Alec thinks about her. Alec wants her to “come down” and be herself, and admit the fact that she is abused. She doesn’t want to, she just rides an “elevator” up to her so called ‘happy’ night life social girl. She hides reality, represented by the ground floor. (For example, grounded). Also,” it “don’t seem” like a good idea “to be alone” right now, because if she is alone she will be stuck with her own thoughts. Not a good idea considering the trauma she is going through. In the end, the girl is so concerned with putting up her image of everything is ok (going high in her elevator) that as she goes up and down, she doesn’t notice Alec, who lays in between on his “best-dressed floors,” trying to declare his love for her.

You cannot ignore the title of the song. The title suggests that Alec has tried many times (6 other times) to explain his love to her. Every time she skips past and worries about her family when she really is “safe and sound” with him.

Again, this song takes place in the moment as the girl arrives home before going in her house. She hesitates, and comes “back talking” to delay the time she has to return to her abuse.

Wow I think there should be a rule about posting the lyrics if you don't have the album. I have the official lyrics with me right now, so here I go.

Now that you're here and see
Everyone of us seem to take the wrong way home
Now that you're safe with me
Trying to get a handle on the neighbor's lawn.

We're safe and sound
so safe for now*

How does it taste to be swinging away for the night?
Doctor said son you should carry a gun (for to) be alright...
but it's the way that you talk and it's the way that you move around
Gravity's one thing and
Gravity's something, but

How about coming down?
There's a time and place in which to be alone
(but lately it just don't seem to alluring)
You're no good not around
Your elevator skipping all me best-dressed floors

We're safe and sound
so safe for now*

Weird but you're back talking

I love this song!

*often, in lyrics in albums, the repeated choruses are only typed
out once, so for the chorus I think the original writter is correct.

Joanna Newsom – Peach, Plum, Pear Lyrics 19 years ago
Though i don't know the actual meaning of the song, i'd like to highlight a particularly beautiful part of the song.

"and the gatherin' floozies/
afford to be choosy" (9-10).

floozies, of course, means "girls or women who has a reputation for promiscuity" according to the Oxford American Dictionary widget. Often times floozies refer to prostitutes, and i think it does.

This line suggests that these prostitutes "can afford" to chose, from the men they, uh 'work for' : )

this shows that there is a surplus of men willing to hire them, and this line of the song shows Joanna's view about society. At least in this song, there are many immoral men hiring these prostitutes. This shows societies downfall.

Ok, and by the way, i don't want any asshole posting something like i am looking to far into this because A) that's what this website is for. and B) she meant this, otherwise why would she have picked the specific words she did?
