mewithoutYou – Allah, Allah, Allah Lyrics 16 years ago
"Come now David, where is everybody going?" he is not talking about Heaven he is talking about death. The whole song is about facing death and the angel telling avid to face it like a man

Björk – Wanderlust Lyrics 16 years ago
wow, if paganpoetry999 is right, that strikes me as a little tragic. like relishing in your own dissatisfaction. people do the same thing with depression. romanticising it rather than dealing with it...

Death Cab for Cutie – I Will Possess Your Heart Lyrics 17 years ago
its starts as a fair idea, "How I wish you could he potential of you and me" kind of like "I wish you could see us as I see us", he has this romantic picture of the two of them being perfect for each other. "Perhaps if we just spent more time together you could grow to love me". But as the song goes on it becomes an ugly obsession, reminds me of a book called "The Collector" by John Fowles, I can actually relate to this guy from my angst ridden younger days...

Sufjan Stevens – Star of Wonder Lyrics 17 years ago
this song is filled with a sense of reverence and awe at the Universe. i can't see the similarities to Sister Winter though, except that it has a beautiful melody as it's backbone

Bright Eyes – Four Winds Lyrics 18 years ago
I think it says the "Son" of Man slouching towards Bethlehem as opposed to "Sum", Son of Man is one of the names they use for Jesus in the bible.

This song is haunting at best. It is very interesting seeing Christians and non-Christians alike are fans of this artist and happily debate over his song lyrics. He clearly has some Christian influence in his lyrics although I fear it may have been a negative experience for him, probably something a dodgy or painful in that area of his life.

I am fairly certain "Four Winds" as a title needs no more debate. The Ezekiel reference is most likely and it is about the redemption that will hopefully come when we have all managed to wipe eachother out.

Kanye West – Jesus Walks Lyrics 18 years ago
He doesn't say "y'all need Jesus" he says "I need Jesus". This is Kanye Wests crowning moment of clarity in which, for a fleeting moment, he had his head on straight. The reason this song has power is because it is raw and honest and is basically a cry out to God. His lyrics fit in with Christian doctrine and he is saying 'I need Jesus'. Which is the plain fact of the matter. We all do. There is no other way around it. Without him we are sunk and anyone who would argue his point with me has my pity

Cold War Kids – Hospital Beds Lyrics 18 years ago
maybe it is two soldiers dying next to each other. 'put out the fire' is a reference to ending the conflict, then again it could also be a reference to ending life or healing from pain.

Cold War Kids – Passing the Hat Lyrics 18 years ago
i think wootrippy is pretty much on the money although not necessarily an immigrant. for the record it doesn't say 'the stealing' it says 'the spirit' aka the holy spirit.

alternatively to the immigrant idea it could just be a guy wanting a holiday so he wanders into a church and takes the offering.

immigrant or holidayer the point of the song is that the man is trying to justify his act of theft by saying 'hey, it's like they knew where the money was going anyway, my cause is far more worthy and besides, the holy spirit is telling me to go to away'

Cold War Kids – Hang Me Up to Dry Lyrics 18 years ago
the lyrics are not meant to be explicit. the reference to being on your knees was a supplicating and defeated gesture long before it was twisted into something sexual by the likes of some. besides these guys are Christians remember.

i can only guess but i agree about the first verse being about falling in love and not being careful making a mess of things.

falling asleep with stains is the point where he realises that something is wrong. its the end of the day and youve been playing in the mud and now its time to go to sleep and you dont want mud on your clothes.

in other words, the clothes are a metaphor for his conscience.

but before he had a chance to set things right he got tossed around and next thing you know he just wants to settle and get hung out to dry, like a coup de grace.

Grizzly Bear – Little Brother Lyrics 18 years ago
no, YOU are against baptism and such. i assume your name was meant to be 'theOccult'? the single reference to being born again is just a reference to a life changing experience. he is saying his little brother will do great things.

i think the idea of the song is he is almost being sarcastic, like "okay little brother, i have heard your new manifesto many times, i know your gonna change the world, but its three am and i want to get some sleep"

Beirut – Elephant Gun Lyrics 18 years ago
I have a feeling it is nothing more than a song expressing the hopelessness of an old drunk. looking back on how he lived and did many grand things in his time but at the end of his life what does he have but wine and memories? it is fatalistic in the sense that the singer has come to the end of his rope and sees nothing but his death through the bottom of a wine glass. he has naught else to live for because he is too old to live as he did. its just about nostalgia and retrospection and romanticism. like an old drunken bard singing in a pub

tragic but beautifully written and composed

Arcade Fire – Intervention Lyrics 19 years ago
To say it is an Anti-Bush song is just a mindless cop out. That is not their style. There is far more to it. You can't possibly deny the biblicial imagery given in the line "The king's taken (taking?) back the throne". The second coming ring any bells?
To say that they think themselves to be top of the pile (morganb3) indicates a kind of arrogance I would not ascribe to Win Butler or the rest of the band.
I personally think he is taking about the state of the whole world. He is asking why God allows such suffering. He is talking about turning his back on faith and trying to make it on your own.
I feel like the title "Intervention" is almost a call to action. Divine Intervention? It is a song about struggle and frustration and pain. What are your thoughts?
