i really love this song. i hafta say what i first thought it meant, and what i thought it meant after i saw the video were two completely different things, however. i think the whole song is building up towards his last girlfriend in the last part of the song. and the 'last time' girlfriends are the arguing ones at the beginning. but all the little nice things that are incorporated into love is what he likes more than anything else |

Okies, I found this interview with Matt T., that rather explains it:
"So then I'm trying to come up with a lyric to put over this a cappella song that I haven't even written yet and I just decided to do something kind of about a conspiracy theory about a Lincoln impersonator being assassinated rather than Lincoln and kinda throw Abe Lincoln in that category with John Lennon and Elvis and all the people that are still kind of "alive." Eh, it's just stupid. Basically, I could have just said "stupid," and that's all the answer you need. But yeah, it was fun though and I like it."

i really love this song, it's the first one i heard off of their new album, and i absolutely fell in love with it. im not incredibly sure what it means, but i really like the lines, "So lock the windows, and bolt the doors/Cause I got enough problems without creating more". it's pretty much true, i wish i had a door i could just bolt to keep me from creating problems for myself. |

ok, here's the meaning i kinda got out of this song:
the first section of the song is talking about two people who are in a squabble of sorts, and they can't seem to make up, cause neither of them want to talk about it. all the other person can see is the wrong that has been done to them, and for that, they won't even think about forgiving. ("you can't see past the blood on my hands")
the chorus doesn't quite seem to fit the song, but it's the part i like best. it's kinda saying that everyone has sinned. ''we think the thoughts, whether or not we see them though''. it's so incredibly true. i so often look down on people who have sinned 'more' than i have, when in reality, it was only my fear of the consequences that kept me from doing it in the first place.
the rest of the song just kinda seems to keep talking about the two people that have completely ruined their relationship by not airing out whatever problem was there, and now they're 'bodies limp on the floor/victims of falling short' which, by the way, is exactly what the Bible said all humans do. "for all have sinned and fall short of the glory of God."
so in conclusion, we can't think we're better than others just because we haven't acted on our sinful thoughts. sorry for that tome. :) |

this is a really awesome song, i love it a lot. i can really relate to it, it seems like people often express the exact same sentiments towards me... it made me realize that sometimes hiding behind a mask of smiles and 'whatevers' isn't always incredibly happy for the people im talking to, and sometimes, what they really want is my opinion. |

i dunno if this is at all right, or if somebody else has already said it, but 'failure to excommunicate' really just means that once you've been accepted into the kingdom of God, you can't be kicked out. God's grace abounds, and no matter what you do, you can always come back to His loving embrace. it makes me think of the middle ages and times like those, when the church would excommunicate people because of something they did (or didn't do). this song is kind of saying that a christian can't be kicked out of God's kingdom, cause "Jesus loves the outcasts, He loves the ones the world just loves to hate" |
