i'm not sure if i have this right, but it's only my personal opinion on it. i believe this poem is about being upset with the world, how you are sick of everything in it and are swallowed up with self-pity. "Whisper in the yard and turn the trees all into toys, Lay there on the ground and turn the dirt into your joy, From what I see and what I know, It's all been boring lately, so I suggest we trade a question mark in for a maybe" When they say this, I picture a child in a field, playing with the dirt. I just usually get this picture that she's sad and depressed, so she's playing with the dirt to distract herself. I'm not sure about you guys, but when I'm depressed, I tend to play around with things so I'm distracted from the sadness. However, the poem goes on.. "I'm not sure that I'm right but I hope you'll understand, I hope that you're still searching for the start that has no end, and all the plastic people ave now become your friends" I believe this is the waking point, she grows up and realizes that life is not always worth crying over. So what if the "plastic people" are different than you? That's no reason to not try to get along. Life CAN be enjoyed. And the final verses.. "Before you start to drift and your soul begins to scream, I just wanted to tell you that you're only listening to 'A Dream'." I believe these verses are referring to how much a person can overthink things. Sometimes we get too swallowed up in our busy lifes. After all, it IS only a dream, only a fraction of a split second in time we are all here. Basically the message of the song is to enjoy life, and not get too caught up in the mess, because in the end, it's not worth it. Yeah, that's just my opinion. Tell me what you guys think. |
