There are more references to pictures in the rest of XO. The first one that comes to mind is obviously 'Cut this picture/ Into you and me' from Sweet Adeline, and I am sure there are images of polaroids in the lyric booklet.
I think the recurring images are one of the best things about Elliott Smith's music. If you listen to enough of his songs it's almost like a mythology with the metaphors (... sometimes I want to make an Aarne- Thompson style classification of them! :p)

I LOVE THIS SONG :D And I'm glad the lyrics are here cos for so long all I could hear was "Hare Krishna pygmy chicken," and as great a mental image as that is it was getting scary. I think it's 'horn rim glasses,' as well, but ... i did think it was pygmy chicken, so I wouldn't listen to me. Whatever. Absolute legend song! |

I always got the image that as well as killing herself when she crashed the car, she killed an alcoholic homeless guy, and when they found the wreckage "they took away the bottle and the hat that he was under- that's the one thing that he could never do." But nobody was particularly bothered about his death, "they never get upset when a moth gets crushed..." I don't know if you have the car hire company Condor Self Drive in America but whenever I see one of their vans I think of this. Maybe my favourite song ever. |

I always heard that bit at the start as being about "makin his way to the city to make some gold," probably cos that's the title of the album. Had no idea it had anything to do with mexico! |

This song is such a perfect description of these people. I love the line about M&S. Although about the Trainspotting point, i think Renton was meaning that you can't blame the English because at least they did something instead of sitting around moaning all the time. '..we're the ones that got colonised by wankers.' And because Scotland's national pride seems to be based round not being English, anyone from Scotland that wants to get on in the world pretends to be English, from the nobility in the 1600s all wanting to live in London to the Merchant City brigade with their sub-media thoughts.
I'm interested in the 'new suit for court' bit though. The suggestions about violent tendencies, or maybe Alex's run in with the police, both sound like possible explanations :)
(I don't think it can go for the monarchy, as someone said earlier, they wouldn't be seen dead in M&S. It's all very aspirational-middle-class.) |

What is a suicide kind of band? :) I'm sure the whole song's not about suicide but the whole point about Romeo and Juliiet is that they killed themselves (by mistake...) to be with each other. It's kind of hard not to get some sort of suicide reference out of that. |
