lexito02: elliott considers himself a pop artist not a folk artist so although his songs may have a meaning that you can go research on the surface pop songs are meant for open interpretation by the masses so if you want something to research research elliott and his ideas of music he wouldn't want some argument over what the song is about to him it was music it's what he did and whatever it means to somebody is what it means to them....now...on with what i think i do agree with the idea that the clown is the guy she is with because elliott uses a clown a lot of the time to recognize a significant other of whatever sort (perhaps referring to how a guy will be a clown to get a girl?) and it is most likely about a woman who is having some relationship problems and is trying to hide it while at the same time is trying to make the best for someone else |

i don't really think that elliott is the type of person who would care about people taking fame away from him. i mean he didn't even want to play the show at the '97 academy awards but they were going to have someone else play "miss misery" if he didn't. i think it is about people copying him or making an a mimicry and mockery of him |

| Elliott Smith – Pretty (Ugly Before) Lyrics

well first to clear things up elliott has been quoted on more than one occasion stating that he feels as if his songs have more a pop sort of meaning to them because in pop the song has a seperate meaning for everyone. that is what he wanted in my opinion. elliott wasn't one to tell pepople what to think. to put in the meaning to this song i feel that this is about his break away from some horrible addiction whether it be another person or drugs or whatever it is(in reference to the line "i felt so ugly before"). now that he is finally free from it he is feeling "pretty" and more up to the world...that's what i feel it's about |
