| The Clash – London Calling Lyrics | 19 years ago |

London Calling rocks! one of best Clash songs. the line "London is drowning-and I live by the river" is about the working class society who lived in the lower class area which were by the river. London is drowning refers to London is going down the drain (economy wise). So London goes down the drain then the people that live near the river will go down first. Of course this was in the time of Margaret Thatcher (the Iron Lady) who 3 million people were on the dole. People were hypothesising at the time about the end of the world, running out of oil and fuel, also Warming of the Earth and Next Ice Age. So the meaning of the song is that they want people far and wide to stand up be counted. Just like in the line "All that phoney Beatlemania has bitten the dust", these were the times of peaceful protests, but the Clash want everyone to revolt against the government. |
