Elliott Smith – Easy Way Out Lyrics 19 years ago
Andi, yes he supposedly killed himself.

self-loathing comments directed towards himself? things his friends and loved ones say to him? either way, he doesn't seem happy with himself at the time he wrote the lyrics.

Elliott Smith – I Didn't Understand Lyrics 19 years ago
To me it sounds like a response to love or caring by an extremely depressed individual with low self-esteem. Not sure if anyone considered this, but maybe it's about Elliott's perception of a particular girl's intentions (hook up and take off), followed by self-deprecating affirmations of this notion, concluding with an admission that he simply couldn't comprehend the love & happiness she could have offered him.

Elliott Smith – I Can't Answer You Anymore Lyrics 19 years ago
too ambiguous for me to guess. perhaps about his relationship with his mom, a (ex)girlfriend, addiction, or a combination of the three.

Elliott Smith – Angel in the Snow Lyrics 19 years ago
what i hold on to in this song is 'sometimes i feel like only a cold still life that fell down here to lay beside you'

i particularl like the intentional (or unintentional) self-comparison to art ('still life') with perhaps a double meaning of being dead (read: 'cold still life that fell down to lay')

Elliott Smith – 2:45 AM Lyrics 19 years ago
quite obvious, although i know elliott's songs often had double/triple meaning. he got abused and resents his step dad for the things he did, including causing Elliott and his mom ('pretty thing') to split up.

So now he turned to the bottle, drugs, or 'whatever's around' to ease the pain/erase the memories.

i agree with first comments on the song that towards the end, he takes it upon himself to vocalize his thoughts, fears, etc. in a public forum (song). he is also looking for someone new to nurture and take care of him (a girl?), referred to as 'somebody's arms.'

'both of you can just fade to black' clearly, at least in my opinion, infer a reference to his mom and step dad.
