Joni Mitchell – A Case Of You Lyrics 14 years ago
i think when she says "i could drink a case of you, and i would still be on my feet" it might mean that she wouldn't allow herself to fall for him or let go with him completely. she doesn't fully trust him.

i think it's plausible, though, as you mentioned, a lot more complicated, to consider that the song was intended to represent a male viewpoint. that being said, i'm not sure why you're referring to people who state the obvious conclusion that the song may be about a same-sex relationship because the singer is female and the object of the song is female as being "dense". other viewpoints are no more and no less valid than yours.

smells like homophobia to me.

it's funny how experience helps give things context.

i think it's possible she wrote this to a guy, who himself was left by another girl, the same way he is leaving the narrator now.

just sayin.

maybe a father-son song?

The Wallflowers – Closer To You Lyrics 17 years ago
the song does seem more complex than my chosen interpretation, but here goes. i like to think it's about the important relationship work that happens in between events. like, sleeping next to someone, hanging in there while they are too busy for you or distracted, everyday things that happen without pomp & circumstance, and how even these times (and maybe especially these times) you really sink into your relationship. this is what makes it work or at least what demonstrates whether or not it will work. it does seem as though maybe he wasn't expressive enough of how he felt, and maybe he wasn't physically around to show her how he felt per se, relying instead on the comfort level between them to get them through and keep things going until he is available to her in that way.

i guess i'm just babbling now.

my partner is away at school, and there are times when i want more of his attention. but we both know every day he's away, he's closer to getting it done and coming home. and he IS missing out on some of my life events by being away, moments he "won't get back," though he would choose to be here if he could. but he's doing what he can in light of the obvious limitations. and if we can get through this, if neither of us "gives up," then we're set.

also plausible, that the person she is singing to resembles that person's mother. possible reason why the singer might be bringing it up: mother disapproved of the relationship. don't think this is the correct interpretation, just saying it's plausible.

i still think it's about lesbians.

um...i think it's easy to assume that the song was written for a guy because of the female narrator, but i think we need to consider the obvious possibility that the song was written for a girl, who is leaving the relationship and at that moment reminds the narrator of a past failed relationship. "it looks like you won't be staying 'round, given the time and the mood you look a lot like her..." referring of course to a past girlfriend who also left the narrator, possibly under similar circumstances. if this song were called "like him" instead of "like her," it would be easier to see. just gotta be a little bit more open-minded people!
