When a person is hungover, "hair of the dog" means to drink more alcohol to get rid of the hangover. |

I think this song might simply be about how the universe and everything in it is on a continuous loop of birth and destruction. All stars will eventually burn out over time, possibly go supernova, destroying entire solar systems in the process. But even in the midst of total destruction and annihilation, energy can never be destroyed - it can only be transformed. Eventually, all the matter from our sun and planets will meet up with matter from other galaxies somewhere out in space (in some "dusty interstellar saloon") and give birth to new stars and solar systems. But alas, the light in those stars too will one day fade, and the process begins once again... And this loop will continue on for as long as the universe exists. |

I think this song says alot about conformity. We have all been trained to go to school, get a job and make a living. Follow the rules and be rewarded. Puppies are also broken in with rewards for obeying their master. First fall in line, then become complacent and lose your spark. There also seems to be a heavy theme about how much excess we have in all our lives. Everybody feels like they deserve what they have, so nobody can or will blame anyone else. Resources are limited, but as long as we get by in our generation, who cares about the future ones? I really love how Isaac's voice changes with the music throughout the song. In the beginning, its playful and apologetic, then it starts to become more serious as the song progresses until it peaks with violent thrashing of instruments and vocal insanity near the end. Simply Brilliant! |

Fell in love this song instantly the first time I heard it live when Mimicking Birds opened for Modest Mouse. I think this song might be about getting older in life and finding a relationship with someone that you can count on and who can also count on you. One eye each from two people can see more than two eyes from one person. The burning star represents the frailty of our lives, as anything that burns will eventually burn itself out, just like all our lives will eventually end one day. Live life to the fullest, and appreciate how special it is to have a bond with someone who will always be there for you no matter what. |

My opinion of this song is that Brock wrote this from the point of view of the computer. I think this is about our internet culture and what a waste of time this all is. The rickshaw pulling a rickshaw is all computers connecting each other, but there's no driver in charge. In the past talking present tense could mean postings like this. I wrote this in the past, but you are all reading this like it's present tense. I like the religious interpretations and also the robot messiah idea too. I think they fit well with the theme of the song as well which is cool because I did not think of this song like that until I came here. Bottom line is no matter what the song means to you, enjoy it because its brilliant on so many levels lyrically and intrumentally. Brock is a mofo genious! |
