Magnolia Electric Co. – It's Made Me Cry Lyrics 13 years ago
Boom.
And there ya have it, folks.
The last four years of my life in barely over a minute.

The Smiths – Oscillate Wildly Lyrics 13 years ago
As mentioned, "The Draize Train" had a single release (I believe it was the b-side of the Panic 12") and a live release.
In around 2005, Mike Joyce also revealed a half-finished instrumental bit typically tagged as "The Click Track", which is the kind of thing that, if it were any other band, wouldn't be as interesting to listen to. A couple years ago there were also two other unreleased instrumentals that came out. Both were effectively untitled, but I know that one of them (the greater of the two, to be honest) was asserted to be "I Misses You". Marr's in rare form there.

Ozma – Apple Trees Lyrics 14 years ago
Anyone else notice the other apple wordplay eluded to in the song?
"Why are you still in my eye?" as in the apple of my eye.
"Deep inside my core" as in an apple core.
I'm sure this isn't coincidental.

This album has a lot of really clever wordplay sprinkled about.

Jawbreaker – Into You Like A Train Lyrics 14 years ago
I love how adventurous this cover is. The core song's the same, but the lyrics are slightly different and the overall character of the song is very much their own.
Every cover should aspire to be this bold.

The Smiths – Money Changes Everything Lyrics 14 years ago
Because this is seemingly the only Smiths song where the awful and misinformed interpretation hasn't already been made, let me contribute:
This song is clearly a veiled reference to homosexuality.

[P.S. Mozzy wrote ambiguously for the sake of the audience, not for the sake of his sexuality]

Mark Hollis – A life (1895 - 1915) Lyrics 14 years ago
I came in wondering the same thing.
Sounds almost French at times.
Looks like Mark Hollis found the perfect counterpart in indecipherability.

Beastie Boys – Girls Lyrics 14 years ago
How do you feel about the play "A Streetcar Named Desire?"
Do you feel that it's crass and inappropriate because there's a rape in it?

The Smiths – Unhappy Birthday Lyrics 14 years ago
I don't understand the hate here.
Sure, it's very direct and not nearly as witty, but that's part of why I like it: it's stripped down and to the point.
It has a very pretty intro, those sweet fade-in bends, and a solid chord progression (I love major-key songs with the minor-key tonalities, and this one hangs on the right notes in the right ways). I also like how it's not a busy song in terms of production.
This is definitely a favorite of mine. It just sounds so different from the rest of their catalog.

There are only two songs from their whole career that I never listen to, and this is far from one of them. It may not be their strongest, but that's by Smiths standards, which entails a steep grading curve.

Phoenix – Girlfriend Lyrics 14 years ago
Not to shit on your parade, but saying "vinyl sounds better" is a silly blanket statement. Unless you're droppin' a quality needle on your Bang & Olufsen and running it through a classy tube preamp into a proper set of passive speakers, you're not tunnin' in the same analog circuit that you're praising.
Whether it's a CD or a vinyl record... that's all the smallest piece of the equation.

The Stooges – Dirt Lyrics 16 years ago
One of the best songs ever written.
I could gush about this shit for days.
I love how Julian Cope said if he were stuck on a desert island, he could make an album consisting of just the demos of this track.
If Iggy says he's just burnin', then ya best believe; it's a fire.
Shit ain't no story. This song ain't about nuthin' more than a state o' mind, and it's just about the most powerful telling of said state.
The only question here is: do ya feel it?

The Wrens – Everyone Choose Sides Lyrics 16 years ago
I prefer the pre-release version of this song.
Still, great tune. Nice catchy licks.

The Wrens – Such a Pretty Lie Lyrics 16 years ago
Rad song.
I remember this being on the copy of Meadowlands I downloaded, but not the actual record.
Was it tacked onto an EP later?
Either way, great melody, kinda lame lyrics.
Also, I like the pre-LP take of Everyone Choose Sides more. Less on the broken amp sound ('cause it's too good a riff for that) and I think there's another guitar layered on at the end.

Anyone ever try reading this song as coming from a dead narrator?

Drive Like Jehu – Good Luck In Jail Lyrics 18 years ago
Burn Collector #11, anyone?

Totally visceral narrative of being just another confused suburban kid, slackin' his way through life.

Kaki King – Second Brain Lyrics 18 years ago
I love this song.
The final line, with the pause leading into the heavy cello sound is amazing.
I don't know if Piano is the best instrument (I'm still partial to guitar), but it works so well for this song.
The only time where Piano has really blown me away is Mike Garson's contributions to Aladdin Sane.

My Bloody Valentine – You Made Me Realise Lyrics 18 years ago
Yeah, the harmony of the chorus is killer.
The microphones and the general sound of the vocals is impressive. I miss the old sound of analog shit like that being pushed to it's limits.

Amazing song through and through.

Smokey Robinson – The Tears Of A Clown Lyrics 18 years ago
The Pagliacci part is what gets me.
It's such an obvious reference, but Pagliacci was a bit more tragic...

Current 93 – Sunset (The Death of Thumbelina) Lyrics 18 years ago
Generally, David's lyrics are always remarkable for me, but on this album I just wasn't able to appreciate as much from it. Nonetheless, this song is wonderful, especially with the buzz of Ben Chasny's guitar work.

The beginning lyrics set is very interesting, though.
...especially since he's (apparently) a big Christian now or whatever.

Amy Winehouse – Addicted Lyrics 18 years ago
There's no flute solos in here. Just melodic embellishments.

Jens Lekman – When I Said I Wanted To Be Your Dog Lyrics 18 years ago
When I first heard of this song, I got psyched 'cause I kinda hoped it would be a stooges reference...

Current 93 – Bonewhiteglory Lyrics 18 years ago
The song is actually by Nature and Organisation, but it's essentially all the same thing.
I think my favorite moment is the pause and shift to David saying "So then: here I am."

Very pensive.

Joy Division – Decades Lyrics 18 years ago
I can see where the war obsession comes from, but this one feels more like a track about Manchester's generation at the time. Not to say that's specifically what it's written about, but I think, if writing comes from the breadth of what you know, then this is all an emotion that would've been fostered from the time and place Ian was from.

I think daprincetrk has a remarkable take on things, and the suicide interpretations are a bit too easy. I think the problem is, though, that all of that puts too much of a spin on things, and constricts the overall value of what the album is capable of. The track sequencing is, in it's own right, quite remarkable, and it does lead down a long path that really finds release in the end.

Also interesting but irrelevant: isn't this one of the few Joy Division tracks that actually ends in a sort of fade-out?

The Shins – Split Needles Lyrics 19 years ago
Kind of a slick song. Really, the fade-in with the really high treble guitar is great, and the EHX Memory Man tricks with the sped up delay really make it.
