Here's my two cents; Subculture had it right..kind of. A rival for Jesus is correct, and who's the ultimate rival? Satan himself. I think this whole song is told from the Devil's perspective. 'Don't you pretend that I'm not alive' - pretty straightforward, Satan is always in the background, and if you mention God or Jesus, you are mentioning Satan too, and don't forget it. 'My bones never ache, unless she's nearby' - Satan damning Christ's existence by cursing Mary, his mother. 'She', the one who bore him, the cause f all Satan's problems. 'Where is your faith? In a safe of dead toungues' - Where's your church these days Jesus? You live on through the faith of ancient (biblical) times and foreign languages alone. Faith in you is dying. 'I can see your reflection in your toem first born' - Satan can feel God's presence as His son dies upon the cross. 'I suspect you've been carrying a pack of wolves' - Your followers aren't holy or good; these people kill, stal and lie just like everyone else. 'I regret not killing you while I had the chance' - Satan regreting not killing Jesus sooner, so he couldn't absolve the sins of humanity. 'Maybe I will always haunt you' - You cant have good without evil. 'Mark the somnolence with truth' - Christ has been dormant for years, the only thing keeping him 'alive' is the bible, the truth. 'Better hang your dead palace, than have a living home to lose' - Much easier to live in the glory and salvation of the bible, than to appear on modern earth again and risk not being believed or followed by today's people. 'In the river ganges, God damns my name' - 'Damn you Satan, you treacherous dog, I'm not listening.' 'Don't let these hands sharpen your eyes' - Jesus' horrible torture before the crucifiction. Just because these people are hurting and destroying you, you still must save them, and die for them. Don't let these beatings exclude them. 'A rasp of tails' - The raking of the cat o' nine tails across Jesus' back. Thats's all my opinion by the way, I'd love to hear what you guys think of it. Great song too!! |

I think this song refers to the traveler of the album encountering a river. This only occured to me recently, but a capillary is a blood vessel, and this is Blood Mountain. It would make sense for it's river to be a capillary. Also, the crest of a river, in hydrology, is the highest level above a certain point (the datum point, or reference point) that a river will reach in a certain amount of time. This term is usually limited to a flooding event I think. '12 years of silence' refers to blood mountain erupting after 12 dormant years, and its rivers beginning to flow again. Also 'river flows violence', 'take away the anchor' and 'shattered wave' all enfoce water imagery. Let me know what you think! |
