I figured out the lyrics by ear, so please forgive me for any mistakes I might have made. Some lines were difficult to figure out, so I just wrote down what I thought Daniel was singing and what made some sense as well. If any of you was able to get the right lyrics where I wasn't, please leave a comment. As for the meaning of the song, Daniel is being quite optimistic ("I can see colours at night"). I think the song is also about his insomnia ("Since I've been running tired") and how he is staying strong and remaining positive ("Kept my head up, sunshine, today will be fine"). I think with the line "It's defeat who changes hands", Daniel means that in the past he's been defeated by his diseases (anorexia, reactive arthritis), but now he is fighting off insomnia. The last part of the song (after Judith Durham's bit) I find somewhat harder to figure out. But maybe it's about Daniel and Natalie being away from each other so much. He doesn't like the distance-thing. Well, that's my take on it. Does anyone else have any ideas? |

I believe this song is about Daniel's arthritis. He repeats that he's got "all of this time" on his hands, that's probably because he couldn't really do anything for a long period of time, so he had a lot of time to kill. It may be a little far-fetched, I don't know, but I think that maybe the line "Where wallpaper painters scrape and scarecrows swell waterlogged" refers to his joints, because the scraping is the pain he feels in his joints, like someone is actually scraping his bones. And the "swell waterlogged" part may symbolise his joints swelling up. I think the part "On this dark kissed day the light shines through only you, Or is it because your silhouette is your frame like an empty window" means that the only way in which Daniel saw light was the sun shining through his window, because he remained inside his home a lot, because he was unable to go out and do stuff, so he's kind of trapped in his home. At the end, "All of that time I was dead, Limbless in bed, sedated experiment", probably refers to not being able to do anything as well. There were a lot of days Daniel couldn't even get out of bed because of the severity of his arthritis. And "sedated experiment" refers to all the pills he had to take against the pain. His doctors didn't know how to treat him, so he got lots of pills to try to ease the pain. The rest of the lyrics I think you can figure out by yourself. I have done my share by writing such a long explanation :) By the way, awesome song! |

I totally love this song! I actually don't think this song is about stalkers or anything, rather about everyone around Daniel and the rest of the band at the time after Frogstomp was released. Tey became famous and therefore people acted differently towards them and this was Daniel's response. He's mainly angry and depressed. He doesn't really care aobut life and wouldn't mind dying. Until I read the lyrics I always thought it was "Stop sucking the blood right out of my veins" instead of "Stop sucking the blood right out of me". These lyrics seem appropriate in its context. Could I be right? |
