Yeah, I'm pretty sure it's 'pocket change' the first time (would make more sense I reckon, more Decemberisty) And I also thought it was 'fist' not 'French'... |

| Jimmy Eat World – Gotta Be Somebody's Blues Lyrics | 16 years ago |
|
This reminds me of Pastor Martin Niemoller's quote 'In Germany they first came for the Communists, and I didn't speak up because I wasn't a Communist. Then they came for the Jews, and I didn't speak up because I wasn't a Jew. Then they came for the trade unionists, and I didn't speak up because I wasn't a trade unionist. Then they came for the Catholics, and I didn't speak up because I was a Protestant. Then they came for me – and by that time no one was left to speak up.' Just that gradually the world is getting more and more screwed up, and more people are dying, and no-one is singing their blues, or speaking up for them, because they're too busy enjoying their own happy lives (with all their silk linings) and eventually there's no-one left to speak for them or sing their blues when they finally get destroyed too. Creepy but powerful. |

| Iron & Wine – Jesus the Mexican Boy Lyrics | 17 years ago |
|
I think all those people saying it has religious connotations are dead right, but I do think it's not a direct metaphor, it's more creating this character of a mexican boy who possesses the same selflessness and humility of the ol' Jeezy Creezy, perhaps showing the 'kingdom come on earth' as it were. So the mexican boy isn't *actually* Jesus, and this guy didn't *actually* run off with his sister, but the song shows in a more modern context how powerful 'agape' love can be - self sacrificing love. Even if there was no such thing as christianity it would be a beautiful message. |

| Iron & Wine – Naked as We Came Lyrics | 17 years ago |
| For some reason to me this seems to be about a young couple facing cancer together - make of that what you will. I know it probably wasn't the original intent, but if you think about it the image is really beautiful. | |
| The Decemberists – The Mariner's Revenge Song Lyrics | 19 years ago |

i first heard of this song when my friend was singing the 'fin him bind him' bit at school - she has a beautiful voice and it was REALLY creepy! now i do rather love this song, but tend to scare people near me when i start singing it subconsiously :S and yes i got the pun first time :D but my sister, unaccustomed to the singing of the decemberists, thought it was supposd to be some form of comic act thing - you know the way his voice sounds? |
