I thought Dellslaves' definition was hugely wrong. It was way off, it didn't even logically fit to the lyrics.
This song has alternately been called depressed and the reason for that is because this song is angsty and moody and is about all of the feelings and problems that drove him under the bridge to live for a while, he felt like an outsider with no place in the world after his parents got divorced.
The pet reference was because of his feelings of loneliness and emptiness, he felt like he didn't have friends and that he didn't fit anywhere.
The fish reference had nothing to do with a woman's vagina, it's pretty illogical to think so given the context of the song. The thought about fish in this song could be due to the fact that he was into astrology and was a pisces (symbol for pisces is two fish swimming against each other) and he mentioned a fishs' lack of feelings.
The "something in the way" line pretty much sets the entire foundation for the song. Like every time no matter what you're doing there is always this dark looming depression that's in the way. |

My two cents says that this song is about the killing spree Jack the Ripper went on in England where he murdered a bunch of whores and how he had help from some other men. The way that that he lured them in was he would offer them a shoulder and some charming conversation, give them some wine and luxurious foods and then he would force them to demean themselves and then kill them, so I think she's vibing to ode to that and talking about how if she's going to be murdered she's going to be the prettiest whore he'd ever taken. |

I think this song is about the cruelty that goes on between teenagers in modern society and the impact that it's under because of controlling higharchy in society, telling younger people all the things they can and can't do, because that's when they're most rebellious.
By the "what you got under your shirt" thing I think he means the way that kids have been picked on come to school strapped with a bomb and make the popular kids "pay" for all the teasing, just generally the way society nods its head at whatever the hurt the American teenagers can think to inflict upon themselves. |

To me it seems that the makeup and hiding scars is about disguising self-injury from people because you don't want to draw attention to yourself.
And I think the self righteous suicide thing is about someone killing themselves and knowing that it's going to hurt the people who love them but caring more about their own feelings than the people who will miss them. |
