I feel this song is about that guy you know: the real badass, driving fast, full of himself, dark and moody and so completely over this thing every other peon on this planet calls life. Too sullen and angry to appreciate anything without a cynical eye. He's controlling. The prince of darkness. "And you can't have that when you're the prince of darkness" pokes a gentle jab at that image. And then there's that slightly weird girl, just a little off-beat. She's not like him, but she can escape with him. She makes things in her spare time out of the pieces everyone else throws away. She blogs, is quirky, but she's passive to him. But Say Hi wants us to remember, it's not the Princes of Darkness we need to worry about. It's the people just like us, quiet and shy, who are really important. And who could break at any time. |
