i just listened to my favorite song for the first time ever :'D i've waited 4 years for this moment. i prayed rivers would put it on his album and he did! best christmas present evar. the fifth stanza has always summed up my view of life/relationships, but recent situations have definitely increased my understanding of the first two verses. |

i kissed a drunk boy. worst part is, it was my first kiss. and he knew that. hah, he even asked "is everything ok?" this morning he brought it up (i guess he actually remembered.. don't know if that's a good or a bad thing now) he apologized and said it was out of line. then he mentioned that he was pretty much sober when it happened. i don't know what to believe. oh and not to mention theres another girl back home that he'll probably get together with once summer starts. how could I do this when I want him to be all mine? |

i love the ff7 interpretation (: this is one of my favorite songs. most of my favorites are long songs and this one is perfect. i counted once how many progressions or layers made up the instrumental part and there are at least 20. so freaking amazing. i love to listen to this song when i'm falling asleep or at least somewhere i can really focus and experience it entirely. you can feel like you're floating away. even laying the allusion aside, the lyrics aren't that cryptic, but i'm gonna go read that book now so i'll be able to get even more out of the song! ..and sorry, iamtwan, but wow. postal service influence? seriously? this album came out years before the postal service was even together!1 but i do agree that clarity is a HUGELY underrated album. and i think its the best JEW album at the very least. |

thats what i was gonna post - the outro/background vocals were wrong. i've recently become obsessed with this song & i love when he sings "who do you carry the torch for, my young man" the third time. what i get from this is people beat the bible or any other beliefs they have to the ground and are so focused on forcing them on others that the true meaning is lost. they're so busy shouting that they can't hear the whispers of truth. just be chill and focus on figuring out your own beliefs before you get lost in a maze of misinterpretations and confusion. idk, just one interpretation? |

anyone who has been through a similar situation knows exactly what this song is about. i pretty much went through the exact same thing and jesse has totally encapsulated the raw emotion and every feeling i ever felt before, during, and now. when we're young we have this idea of what relationships are supposed to be like, wonderful and glorious, and we aren't prepared for growing up and facing the reality of how messed up relationships can and most likely will be. the excitement and glory of a new prospect and intimacy soon fades after it goes somewhere the other person isn't ready for or wasn't expecting. he doesnt want to go through with having sex but the girl obviously does, so he gets caught up in the moment and goes along with it, all the while feeling sick to his stomach. this girl used to be all he ever thought about but after what happened it chokes him up to even think about her. the line "she's probably only looking for ...so much more than he could ever give, a life free of lies and a meaningful relationship" can be confusing, but i think the second clause could actually be referring to what he has to offer, not what she wants. all he can give her is a meaningful relationship; she just wants physical pleasure with no strings attached. listening to this song on repeat has gotten me through one of the lowest points of my life. the emotions of this song are very real; take it as an example and don't do anything you aren't comfortable with if you're unsure of the other person's motives. just take it slow and save yourself the hurt. |
