"And I really miss what really did exist
When I held your throat so tight."
This is about having yr hands around someone's neck in bed, right? No one ever talks about how common that is. Intimate, vulnerable, dangerous--makes sense that it would find its way into this song. |

So the song's all about Andre. It's his relationship, his turmoil, his kid, right? His parts are all about wondering if it was possible to feel like this forever and his wish to abracadabra all of the ugliness away...heartfelt stuff. And then what does Big Boi do? Come in and get in some faces about all the bullshit that's being pulled, call a spade a spade, and let it be known that dicks will be put into the mouths that they need to be put into. That's a great ying and yang of what it's like being heartbroken versus watching everything yr friends have to go thru when it's happening to them. |

There's no other song where the notes that crash in at the top of the song so accurately reflect the tone of the words that are about to follow them. There's little worse than knowing how much love that you have shared and yet seeing no way to reconnect from the deep divisions that have been created. Watch out for those low ambitions. |

This has always played as a bedroom scene to me until honey said "after hours bar" and suddenly the picture being painted clicked into place. Either way, it's the same kind of intimacy yr after--keeping the rest of the world outside and feeling like you could someday be someone's very special one. It's nice how the lyric switches from "but" to "and" to "cause." It's as if the idea is manifesting itself into reality throughout the song. She's willing the door to be closed. And the people look well in the dark. |

"Liberty is a lie" is probably my favorite line in pop music. This song itself has been my favorite for about ten years, but lately I'm trying to actively move away from it. Maybe I never will be satisfied. But geez, do I have to bask in it so much? |

| Yo La Tengo – Autumn Sweater Lyrics

I always thought that it was "almost patiently" not "oh most." That would give the narrator a little bittersweet sense of humor. Maybe "Is this too late to call this off?" is about the breakup of the two. The knock on the door catches him by surprise; he wants to get away from everything in order to make things right. When yr trying to figure out if a relationship is worth salvaging, it's so common to fall into the habit of comparing it to the way things felt in the beginning.
I bet that she looked amazing in that sweater. |
