Yup.. Entirely not about Kurt or Courtney. Dave Grohl insists! Listen to the lyrics... It's EXACTLY about what it sounds like it is...and that's how it should be. But feel free to liberally interpret. Nice use of acoustics to transition between the near silence of sadness and the rage and power of anger. Great song! I love it! |

I find it to be about the things that are lost due to fame. The man who has only been in the factory for 40 years in some ways rich comparatively speaking. He has something that those who sought and obtained fame (in the way described) can never get back. The song is something like warning. The "life" is real, but there's so many lies, so many things you just may not expect. But I like to read the positive into things if I can see it, so what do I know. |

I hesitate to say it means anything semantically.... but its meaning in terms of its EFFECTS are awesome. The melody is so powerful, the lyrics are like a mantra. If you lose yourself into it, it gives you this wild, amazing sense of GODLIKE POWER! (And frankly, its a touch scary!) Songs like this make me wonder if I'm just a touch manic-depressive, because if there's any feeling I'm feeling, it has to be Mania! If I were part of some rebel army fighting space aliens, this would be the song I could live by and die by. |

Nod about the mutt line. What better would signify the craziness of the singer than the fact the guy thinks his dog is ACTUALLY laughing at him? But it is not necessarily the case that the one that leaves is a mutt. I get giggles flip-flopping the meaning between that of a friend or lover and that of a real mutt: a dog. It seems like a bit of a “conceptual illusion” (my words), much akin to those dual faced “optical illusions”, some examples of which I can think of is one where you either see a rabbit or a duck, and another where one sees either dolphins or lovers in the act. While obviously many songs contain entities with dual meanings (otherwise, why would songmeanings.net exist?) This one seems to be such a tease that its worth noting. It is in a song about the point of insanity, and one may feel as they’re going insane flip flopping through the two meanings. This search for meaning and the resulting ambiguity is a perfect complement to the song. |
