| Puscifer – Green Valley Lyrics | 14 years ago |
| This is one of my favorites off the new album. This song, along with "Monsoons", has a strong Fate theme. The Verde River is in Arizona, near Flagstaff. Coincidentally, that's where Maynard's vineyard is located. In order for him to have a successful harvest, he must depend on outside forces. In this case, one of those outside forces is the Verde River. This song is a resolution to trust and hope and to not "fight the flow" of powerful forces (specifically, the Earth). | |

This song can be summed up simply and generally as a prayer for rain. As a winemaker, Maynard has to depend on the rain to "bring color" or life to "relieve" an otherwise thirsty and dying vineyard. Rain represents hope for a fruitful harvest season. On a similar note, this song has a strong Earth theme. Maynard knows his place in the order of things when he asks "Why am I to carry on?". He knows that he can do his part but still fail because he must depend on something greater than himself. He is acknowledging the greater forces at work here that could save or ruin him. |

| A Perfect Circle – 3 Libras Lyrics | 15 years ago |

I've got to clear this up. To my best knowledge, Maynard is not and has never been married. He was at one time engaged to a woman named Jennifer Brena Ferguson (whom the song "Brena" is written about, track #11 on Mer de Noms). As far as I know, they did not get married and are not together anymore. In a 2009 interview, Maynard described himself as "happily unmarried". Now that that's out of the way, let's get on with the interpretation! In a general sense, I interpret this song as one about finding what you believe to be your "soul mate" and being rejected by them. That is not to say the person is actually your soul mate, just the most important person to you at the moment you say it. I don't believe that this song is about Maynard's soul mate because it is about "3 Libras", indicating more than one person. I know that could open up a discussion about "Do you only have one soul mate?" or "You only have one soul mate at a time", but I'd like to leave that for another time and continue interpreting what I think the song means specifically. In a more specific sense, I believe the lyrics for this song go hand in hand with the lyrics for Magdalena (track #2 on Mer de Noms). Magdalena is clearly about going to a gentleman's club/strip club. The main chorus reads, "I'd sell my soul, my self esteem, a dollar at a time for one chance, one kiss, one taste of you my Magdalena". I believe the lyrics could easily be meant for a girl or girls Maynard met in a strip club on one or more occasions. I may be dead wrong, but I don't feel like this is about someone (or 3 someones) Maynard is familiar with or a soul mate. Take for example the following excerpt from the song: "A name in your recollection, down among a million same". I interpret this to mean that in each situation, he is just a name or a face to her. In other words, he is no one special. She has seen "millions" of other guys just like him. Strippers see different guys each time they work. There is no connection other than the fact that she is working for money and he has money. Also, the name "Libras" part of the title might indicate a lack of familiarity between two people. A common question asked between people who don't know each other is "what's your sign?". The 3 women he's referring to must have answered that they were Libras. As for more "proof" that he is talking about a stripper or prostitute, he refers to the subject as a "fallen angel". Society in general looks down on strippers and consider them "fallen" people. These women are doing things that in general are not considered "acceptable". Another indicator is the first line of the song. "Thew you the obvious and you flew with it on your back" could be interpreted generally as "I indicated interest and instead of sticking around, you left". My interpretation is that he flashed some money ("the obvious", as in "this is obviously what you want") and wanted her to stay, but once she had fulfilled her duty, she left with "the obvious" on her back (in her shorts or wherever). He also refers to the subject as "naked but oblivious". I believe this literally means "naked", as in "without clothes". The contrast here is that another meaning for "naked" is "open" or "intimate". If someone shows their nakedness, there is normally a great amount of intimacy involved. In this case, there is nakedness, but no intimacy. Conclusion: This song is about a situation that occurred more than once (with at least 3 Libras) and involves someone he is not familiar with, who is a "fallen angel", literally naked, but oblivious to the fact that he can look past what other people see and truly care about her. That's my two cents. Feel free to disagree, but I think my opinion comes from the facts that Maynard has chosen to reveal about his personal life. I could still be wrong, but when I see people saying things like, "Maynard is married", I have to chime in. |

Al.B.Crazy's 01-27-2006 post hit it right on. My two cents: The author goes from a depressed state of feeling trapped and wanting to kill himself to realizing that he is in control of his life. Instead of destroying himself, he destroys what's really hindering him. Watch the video if you haven't. |

| A Perfect Circle – Judith Lyrics | 19 years ago |
|
My take on this song is that Maynard wrote it shortly after his mother died, when he was going through the "anger" part of the grieving process. It's a very emotional song. Later on, after he had moved past the anger (not saying there's no anger left), he wrote the song 10,000 days, his tribute to Judith. In Judith, he's pointing out what he sees to be a fallacy in her thinking. On the one hand, he is impressed by her strong faith. On the other, it doesn't make sense to him why she would continue to love and serve a "god" who allows her to suffer and die. He's asking the question, "If God is good, why do bad things happen to good people?". |
