Obviously the above quote from Billy himself is the essence of what this song is about. But to further that quote somewhat: I think the protagonist is quite grief-stricken and has finally decided just to lay it on the line and proclaim that he's willing to do anything to make this girl happy and to stay with him. Meanwhile, this girl still holds this misguided belief that something better, someone perfect, is right around the corner. Even though, perhaps, all you can really ask for in someone is a person who tries. |

Whir n., sound of something in rapid motion To me this is one of those simple songs you could just listen to on repeat and it's constant tempo allows the end of the song to run right into the beginning as it repeats. On a deeper level, it strikes me as talking about someone with anxiety problems or personal/committment issues who is trying to face those fears. There is an attempt to "whir yourself around" and conquer your fears, only to "fall back down" and laps back into those same problems. Then thrown into the song there seems to be a girlfriend saying "all your prayers in my ears" perhaps wishing that these anxieties would just disappear. Hence the phrase "don't you care" (about these problems). It sounds like she just wants things to right themselves so that they can start a family. |

| The Smashing Pumpkins – This Time Lyrics | 19 years ago |

To me this song signifies the defeat of true love in the face of circumstance. It says to me that, when you're in love, you believe in it completely...and you believe that you can beat the odds and that lasting love has found you. But then when "the spell is broken", you really "must be told" and hear it be said out loud because you can't believe it's gone. But lyrics like "crashing down again" and "only love can win" seem to say that even though you thought this would be the one, you've got to keep trying and that you may lose and love many more times. It seems that the protagonist wanted this to be the one, and will forever feel sorrow for this loss but realizes the reality that there's nothing they can do to bring back the way it was. |
