Scissor Sisters – She's My Man Lyrics 18 years ago
http://library.thinkquest.org/J001779/anniec.htm

I checked out the Annie Christmas item. It appears to be correct. They even teach Annie Christmas to third graders as a metaphor for strength.

So the song appears to be about liking a very butch woman who's so butch she's like Annie Christmas. Annie Christmas had a mustache. And she used to drive a boat in New Orleans. she was so strong she lifted bails of hail and Mike Fink came up to her and told her she shouldn't be working bailing hay but instead at home sewing like a woman should. She Threw the bail of hay in the river and it caused a tital wave 150 ft ft high and carried Mike Fink all the way to Nantuckett. In other words, this is a hard job but Annie was the best at it, better than any man so f*ck off.

Alanis Morissette – Not The Doctor Lyrics 19 years ago
I think alanis is talking about a man who is in a psychological institution. He is crazy, and lonely. He has been there a long time, and my have been there longer than anyone else. He has begun manifesting reality around him, and his "guardian angel" comes and visits him once in awhile. I think the song takes place many time though where the "id" of the person transforms from me, to my, to i, and to we several times over.

The girl talking in the song dosen't want to fix anything for him, because he must do it himself (ergo, ego/id), she dosen't want to take ownership for his woes (because she can't.. as she is unreal and only manifested by his subconsious).

as it relates:
This is in the mind of the man: (As the person visiting him)

I don't want to be the filler if the void is solely yours
I don't want to be your glass of single malt whiskey
Hidden in the bottom drawer
I don't want to be the bandage if the wound is not mine

Then the line that HE exibits on his own after projecting his "visitor"

Lend me some fresh air

More from his visitor:

don't want to be adored for what I merely represent to you
I don't want to be to be your babysitter
You're a very big boy now
I don't want to be you mother
I didn't carry you in my womb for nine months

His part:
Show me the back door

This is a reference to "a backdoor" into psycosis. (For example, a reference point, that can draw one to a state of normalcy. A person's mind can draw conclusions, and even awake from slumber if the proper words are spoken).

They now dance in harmony, in a pseudo conversation that takes place, but is not actually described.

[]

Visiting hours are 9 to 5 and if I show up at half past six
Well I already know that you'd find some way to sneak me in and oh

[reference to: you can sneak me in.. of course because we have no sense of time, and the woman visiting is not REAL.. and hence, she can visit ANYTIME, and it wouldn't matter]

Mind the empty bottle with the holes along the bottom
You see it's too much to ask for and I'm not the doctor

[This tangles the conversation exclaiming that the only way to TELL Time, is by the nurse who has you take your medicine. The nurse has medicine up to 5 times a day depending on your condition). EVEN if you are a mental patient. YOU CANNOT AVOID THIS PLAGUE, the Wildcard Tangent called Time. It's essential to your recovery, which is the only thing that helps create the self describing entity he/she calls an alter ego, ergo, super"ID"

Now once again, the dance continues:

don't want to be the sweeper of the eggshells that you walk upon
I don't want to be your other half I believe that 1 and 1 make 2
I don't want to be your food or the light from the fridge
on your face at midnight

The man has his time to EAT. Another staple of being in a mental institution: Another way of telling time, is that it's time to eat. (in his mind, he may have drifted off to have conversations with the visitor. The lines above describe mini/many manifestations that take place).. THEN DING!! It hits him. It's time to eat.

Hey what are you hungry for

Now they dance again, after they have eaten.

I don't want to be the glue that holds your pieces together

(if you are in a mental institution, you may glue things together)

I don't want to be your idol
See this pedestal is high and I'm afraid of heights

It's not time to pray (some mental institutions don't allow this.. but you do it secretly in your room.) Relationships with Spirits could alter your senses, and thereby exascerbate the relationship with the so called visitor..

I don't want to be lived through
A vicarious occasion

(You are the other half of me.. alterego/id)

Please open the window

This is reference to the outdoor acts, the "RECREATION TIME" that the mental pateint gets. it's sometimes the ONLY thing they look forward to.

Now, the hard one:

They converse again, the man and his sister, or visitor, or whomever he is manifesting.

I don't want to live on someday when my motto is last week

(she now says something, that resembles "in delay", or N - Delay)

I don't want to be responsible for your fractured heart
and its wounded beat

(If you find out I'm not real, It won't bother me any because I'm not real)

I don't want to be a substitute for the smoke you've been inhaling

(Psychiatric patients get smoke breaks too)

What do you thank me
What do you thank me for

The last part, is actually a question, resembling the third person... "In all of this originality.. does this person really exist ... and your mind's eye is thinking.. with all of this double manifestation of reality, is it really worth it to me to juggle to realities"

I really think it has to do with a drug dependency that resulted in a visit to the hospital (psych ward) and a detox unit. I think that maybe whomever was observed in the detox ward was inspiration for this song.

thanks. -justin
