Paddy McAloon had a girlfriend who was moving to France when he wrote this song. Specifically, she was moving to Limoges. When you listen to the song in that context, it makes perfect sense. Lions In My Own Garden Exit Someone. Geddit? |

Roger Waters wrote recently that Shine On You Crazy Diamond was dedicated to Syd but that this song had a wider meaning. Wish You Were Here is a bit of a take on the seaside postcard thing but to me the crucial lyric is "did you exchange a walk on part in the war for a lead role in a cage?" War being glorious. The cage being a life of fame, under the microscope, with no escape. So, Barrett got a glorious, brief, walk on part and the rest of the band got to live in the public eye with less glory. Maybe... |

Mr Firey. Read more carefully! Any minor Roxy fan knows Ferry wrote all the songs on the first two albums. I said it was the first song he wrote. Not recorded. Wrote!!! So it is surely of some interest to fans that he chose to hold this song back until the third album. Don't you think? With all due respect... and a little knowledge. |

It's not about bunking off school! It's about growing up, first love and nervousness turning into easy love and confidence. But the twist is that this is down to fame. So is it real? What do you watch at the matinee? Films! Fantasy! |

Although this appears on Roxy's third studio album, it was the first song Ferry wrote. Maybe he needed to establish himself before he felt brave enough to commit it to vinyl. Superb, and very strange. Nothing like this could be accepted by a modern band's record company today. Glorious! |

It's a two-parter set at a party. First half is frantic and reflective of a party in full swing. Second half is the quiet, reflective aftermath. Come on! You've all been there... |

One of Ferry's most blunt lyrics. Lottery and X-Factor winners beware! It's not all about Money and fame. For further listening try "Can't Buy Me Love!" The live version is really quite chilling. Recommended! |
