| The genius of this song (besides its outrageously catchy theme) is how perfectly it walks that line. Is it about going to the YMCA to meet other gay men, or just a place to get back on your feet and make new friends? Lines like "They have everything for you men to enjoy, you can hang out with all the boys" and "You can do whatever you feel" could definitely be read both ways. Innocent anthem to a gym/society, or a subversive gay theme that gets entire baseball stadiums of fans to dance along? | |

To me, this song speaks of sensing that something is terribly wrong with the world, that human events are being controlled. With the laws that protect our freedom slipping away, it feels like "Trying hard to speak and, fighting with my weak hand." It becomes hard to focus on anything of great scope while occupied with divisions of pro-life vs. pro-choice, Democrat vs. Republican, race against race... all while having the constant drone of mass-produced entertainment surround me. "Driven to distraction, it's all part of the plan." "I want to love you but I don't know if I can," a feeling I've had for years while under depression and then on anti-depressant drugs. They ease the despair, but also make deeper emotion so blurry and numb. Sometimes it all seems too much, and I have no idea how to fix it. Sometimes just forgetting it all with someone I care about brings peace, as in the last verse. |

This song is very cheerful and uplifting, I really like it for the most part. Here's the lyric that made me stop dead in my tracks though... "Losing the feeling of feeling unique Do you know what I mean?" No actually, I'm not quite sure what you mean. Are you saying you feel so happy because you're exactly like everyone else? Why would losing the feeling of feeling unique ever be a good thing? There is a difference between feeling unique and feeling totally different from everyone else: you have a lot in common with every person, and also a lot that is uniquely individual to you. |
